MDS 2016 - Primitive but the price is right

What is our primary use case?

We use MDS for analytical and operational enterprise reference data management including management of campaign, product and financial management hierarchies.  We currently only use batch interfaces to feed or get data from it. We also use it to maintain source to enterprise data mappings that are fed to ETL via a generic RDM (Reference Data Management) design. We have a variety of data stewards who use the tool for data management and they get automatically notified via email with a link when new products need hierarchy assignment.

How has it helped my organization?

It enables data stewards to directly interact with data on a web site or Excel without building a custom solution. This includes data stewards getting notification emails automatically when new data is loaded including a link to the specific data that needs to be updated. It also has a built-in single level of approval management that is used where versions of data need to be approved prior to publishing. The end result is more consistent data, more consistent data and fewer data silos.

Reference data management is integrated via using standard automated ETL processes extracting from the published database views. This eliminates the need for one-off, silo'd and uncontrolled data management.

What is most valuable?

  • Ease of use
  • Excel interface
  • Simplicity
  • Soft delete support
  • Sophistication of business rules
  • Price (FREE for sql server enterprise license)
  • Hierarchy management
  • Security integration with AD
  • Very fine grained security
  • Easy to build (and extendable) business rules
  • Automatic Notification
  • Versioning
  • Integrated boolean business rules
  • Change detection
  • Integrated workflow
  • Staging support
  • Publication support
  • Ability to propagate from one repository to another
  • Ability to share reference data across models
  • Integrates as a web part
  • Flexibility
  • Includes both batch staging process and Excel data loading
  • Unused area of hierarchies to easily identify members not assigned

What needs improvement?

  • Product Roadmap - it is unknown how Microsoft will support this tool long term as it now gets very few if any updates when new versions of SqlServer come out.  There is no known plan for Azure PaaS version.
  • It "can" have a bug where a model becomes corrupted.  It still operates but will no longer hard delete (purge function stops working) and can no longer migrate the model to another repository as the create or clone functions stop working.  It gives internal FK and duplicate row errors when attempting these functions.
  • Another unpredictable bug:  Adding new attribute to entity doesn't show in web interface - only Excel.  Only known solution is to drop the entity and re-create it. Only experienced once so far.
  • Business Rules cannot prevent bad data entry!  Business rules cannot be used to prevent bad data from getting entered - it only marks the data as bad after it is saved because rules can only apply to data being saved.  And even then it requires the data steward to push a validate rules button.  If they forget they won't notice (and notifications won't go out) regarding rule violations.  In my 30+ years in IT I've never experienced a tool that only allows you to create reactive rules that identify bad data but never prevent it from getting saved. In a large enterprise I would rule this as a show stopper.
    • Bottom line:  Business rules need the ability to prevent data changes, not just validate saved changes
  • Second largest shortcoming:  Hierarchy integration views don't support custom attributes. This capability (which would be awesome if it worked right) is completely worthless without supporting custom attributes.
  • Explorer GUI is clunky and awkward.
  • Tool needs to get more frequent enhancements.  For example, since 2016 there has been no enhancement except replacing Silverlight in the 2019 version.
  • It needs the ability to publish only a single business rule. Publishing business rules requires publishing all rules and results in requirement for re-validation of all rules.  Until that is done the validation status on all affected records is in an "awaiting validation" state which can adversely affect data usage and validity.
  • Needs ability to remove menu options that may not be relevant to data stewards such as Entity Dependencies, Collections or Changesets.
  • Needs ability to default user group's first screen.  For example defaulting to a specific hierarchy display.
  • Resolve a bug in the domain based validation business rule feature: the web interface will not allow correcting domain based lookups in the child properties (only works using hierarchy drag/drop or within Excel).
  • Hierarchy names should allow exceeding 30 characters.
  • Selecting child members within the navigator in a hierarchy results in the GUI just ignoring you... it should allow selecting children in the navigator or at least give an error message. (Note that 2012 version resulted in blank middle panel when this occurred rather than just ignoring you).
  • Needs to allow renaming the code and name attributes within the publication views (only allows renaming in the UI).
  • Derived hierarchy views should optionally include all attributes from all respective levels, not just the code and name attributes.
  • Needs to allow setting the CODE attribute datatype as numeric rather than forced datatype of string (which turns into nvarchar(250) behind the scenes). This is a significant headache as simple sorting on the CODE attribute with numbers causes numbers without leading zeros to not sort correctly and it requires adding business rule to enforce numeric datatype.
  • Needs to support setting view datatypes to varchar rather than forcing nvarchar so subsequent extracts do not have to do datatype conversion if not using unicode in your target database.
  • Versioning lacks granularity as it only supports model-level versioning.
  • The deployment migration GUI tool doesn't support data, only meta-data making the GUI export tool fairly useless. (Including data requires use of command line to support data)
  • The deployment migration tools do not support business rules requiring manual maintenance when using multiple environments (e.g. dev/sit/prod).
  • Excel plug-in needs to support hierarchies.
  • Needs to support email notification to more than one email group/user.
  • Staging process is non-intuitive and overly complicated.
  • Repository should utilize a prefix or unique schema for each model so that entities and views do not have to be uniquely named across models.
  • Needs ability to integrate seamlessly with data quality products. (DQS has some level of integration with MDS but the integration is overly complex and DQS's days are likely numbered).
  • Notification should work without an AD user first accessing the model. Once you setup the notification for an AD user or group it should just work without every user having to log on at least one time.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using MDS in some capacity for around 10 years going back to 2008R2 version

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues encountered with stability in terms of up time but one of our models won't send notifications just to specific users which appears to be a bug in the interface between MDS and SqlServer SMTP as MDS logs the notification but SqlServer does not log the email send (success or failure).

There is a bug if you set the CODE or NAME attribute security to read-only for a group that the admin is in, then administration capability disappears for that admin account. This can be reset in the backend repository but is a significant bug. Supposedly it was fixed in CU1 but was not.

Some business rules when attempting to use them cause vague database error that was also supposed to be fixed in SP1 but was not.

Notification stopped working after a couple of years. MDS is sending notification but it no longer communicates with SqlServer smtp even though SqlServer SMTP can be successfully run from other tools such as SqlAgent. It appears to have stopped working after a SqlServer patch.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Our largest entity is a few million rows. It does not seem to scale well for any significant volumes.  I would hesitate to use the backend for CDI/customer purposes unless you have very small customer volumes.  Consider that if you're looking at Profisee Maestro solution since it shares the same backend database design.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Microsoft was incredible during beta testing but customer services hasn't been needed since much earlier versions that had installation bugs. Documentation online is missing some critical installation nuances such as SqlServer security settings needed in order to deploy models.

Technical Support:

There is a great amount of information available on the web for this product and its relatively simple so direct technical support has been rarely needed once we were off the beta version.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We didn't have a previous solution. Any augmentation of source system data for reporting was done via spreadsheets.

I find this product far superior to a previously used product which was Hyperion MDM, now Oracle MDM. Although Oracle has enhanced their product in recent years since I last used it it was built upon the dying Hyperion database and had no governance built in and no web interface.  And the Oracle tool is hundreds of thousands verses this tool which is free.  Need I say more?

Note that competing products in the market place are very expensive and will include possibly more sophistication than you need. This tool does everything you will need for simple dimension or reference data management purposes.

How was the initial setup?

It is fairly straightforward as the Excel plug-in makes the initial data load very simple.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented it in-house.

What was our ROI?

There was no cost for the software as it comes with SQL Server BI, and Enterprise editions. The ROI is terrific and it means you can avoid building or purchasing a solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

None as our in-house staff did the setup. There is no day to day maintenance needed. The 2016 version is no longer supported by modern browsers so high recommend only using the latest (2019) version available.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

No as this was the only no-cost option with level of sophistication we needed.

What other advice do I have?

  • It's sweet spot is reference data. Attempting to use it for large scale customer data or products may be problematic.
  • The tool is integrated into Dynamics AX but there is not clear direction by Microsoft for improving and supporting the product as a stand alone long term. Use it with that knowledge and look for any indication from Microsoft that it will continue to support it or deprecate it.
  • If starting out I would not recommend using any version prior to 2019.

SharePoint’s greatest strength is it’s an all-in-one approach – it’s a portal, a content management system, a search engine, a social collaboration platform, a web development platform, and so much more. Its greatest weakness is that it’s an all-in-one solution – everything and the kitchen sink; a jack-of-all-trades, a master of none. Some argue that SharePoint is a “mile wide, but a foot deep.” It offers so much, but some features are seen as still ‘developing’ or even sub-par. But there are a lot of tools and features, and with each release, it gets better and better (though more complex).

“With Office 365, Microsoft currently offers the most powerful communication and collaboration suite on the market. And the latest announcements from the Microsoft Ignite conference across the main workloads like SharePoint, Teams and Powell Apps prove that they continue to move forward fast in order to stay ahead of the game,” says Antoine Faisandier, CEO of Powell Software, a Digital Workplace software that extends and enhances the Office 365 capabilities.

It’s important to note that SharePoint is still a technology. It doesn’t include all of the people, process and planning that is required to make any intranet technology work. Intranet technology will fail without careful planning, process and committed people. Most of the key ingredients of a successful intranet in the digital workplace are based on people, and process; technology is merely an enabler.

Among the latest features, building upon the SharePoint 2016 version:

  1. Delve / My Profile (About Me) - My Sites disappears in favor of a new profile, About Me, that also uses the Delve inference engine.
  2. Cloud / Hybrid - Hybrid enables you to integrate your on-premises farm with the cloud, at your own pace.
  3. Durable Links - Resource-based URLs now retain links when documents are renamed or moved in SharePoint.
  4. Image and video previews - Preview images and videos in SharePoint Server 2016 document libraries.
  5. Large files - now supports uploading and downloading files larger than 2,047 MBs
  6. Mobile - an improved mobile navigation experience.
  7. Search - SharePoint Search has now fully integrated the FAST Search engine, with more features, and indexes up to 500 milliion documents (per app).
8. Sharing - better user sharing options, including a Shared folder, and invitation email notifications.
  9. Microsoft Teams - social project sites, akin to an enhanced Team SIte, but with chat, presence, inline calling and messaging, including Skype and other third-party apps. It now includes voice mail.

We are Intranet consultants (www.PrescientDigital.com) and we principally use Office 365 - SharePoint Online (almost complete feature parity with SharePoint 2016) for Enterprise Content Management; improving the way our organization functions in terms of employee collaboration and knowledge sharing specifically via document management, and social collaboration (discussion groups, profiles and blogging being the most used social tools). Increasingly we use Teams, and use it with external clients that can be invited to a specific Team.

The solution could use improvement, however, in terms of Web content management / social media tools (e.g. wikis), and general usability. We also encountered many, many problems with deployment -- customization and implementation requires more work than you expect. Additionally, like most organization, we customized the user experience, which can break (particularly specific webparts) with every SharePoint patch and upgrade. However, we found no issues with stability or scalability.

We switched to SharePoint Online because its the market leader, and 80% of our clients use SharePoint. We are first and foremost SharePoint intranet consultants, so we build and design other intranets, and need to deeply understand the ins and outs of SharePoint.

The initial setup of SharePoint is very complex and requires a lot of work to customize, including hiring outside experts. The advice I would give to others looking into implementing this product is plan, plan, plan, and plan to run over-budget (unless you hire very strong outside experts to develop and run your plan and budget) for customization activities. And do not underestimate the infrastructure required (servers and farm configuration).

Additional changes and improvements were announced to the SharePoint Online in Office 365. An overview of the changes are here: Big Changes to Office 365 / SharePoint Intranets

SharePoint 2019
SharePoint 2019

SharePoint 2019 features major upgrades to the user experience design and mobile access, including a new dedicated SharePoint app. The UX for SharePoint 2019 is noticeably superior to previous versions of SP. It’s very clean and modern, with a major emphasis on images, and video. The new "modern UX" is fully responsive, and has it's own dedicated mobile app.

“SharePoint 2019 has the most UX (improvements) than we’ve ever delivered before in a SharePoint release,” Hani Loza, of the Microsoft SharePoint team, on www.IntranetBlog.com.

Among the new UX features, particularly noticeable in the new SharePoint Communications Sites, are drag-and-drop web parts for image galleries, slideshows, hero slideshow, and video.

Displays information well, simple to install, and low maintenance

Pros and Cons

  • "In the process of using data there is the Extract, Transform and Load (ETL). For extracting we are using another software, for transforming we are using our own coding in C#, and then we use Microsoft BI for loading the information. Microsoft BI displays information very well."
  • "The solution could improve the extraction and transformation of data. For example, you transform the data and then send it to Microsoft BI without having to use your own API. We are only providing the API to Power BI, and then Power BI is doing the job."

What is our primary use case?

We were using Microsoft BI but it could not do what we wanted it to do. Then we moved to an open-source platform, which was Apache Tika, Kafka, and third solution. We ended up moving back to Power BI only to display the information because displaying information with Power BI is better than open-source software. We are not using all aspects of the solution at the moment.

What is most valuable?

In the process of using data there is the Extract, Transform and Load (ETL). For extracting we are using another software, for transforming we are using our own coding in C#, and then we use Microsoft BI for loading the information. Microsoft BI displays information very well.

What needs improvement?

The solution could improve the extraction and transformation of data. For example, you transform the data and then send it to Microsoft BI without having to use your own API. We are only providing the API to Power BI, and then Power BI is doing the job.

In an upcoming release, Microsoft BI should increase the functionality of the solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Microsoft BI for approximately six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We were satisfied with the stability of Microsoft BI.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have 30 users using the solution in my organization.

How are customer service and support?

We are in contact with the support of Microsoft but I have not been in contact directly.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used other solutions, such as Apache Tika and Kafka.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

The solution only needs one person to do the maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are a few options available for purchasing a license. Typically the number of users you have will determine the price of the license. The more users you have the more you will pay.

What other advice do I have?

The solution has had a lot of changes over the years and it is very good. However, there is more work to be done on extract and transform functions for it to be done properly.

I rate Microsoft BI an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Stable with reasonable pricing but doesn't integrate well with non-Microsoft solutions

Pros and Cons

  • "The solution offers a lot of documentation and tutorials for users to learn about various aspects and features."
  • "The solution is not actually satisfying the complex programs that we want to execute."

What is most valuable?

The solution is bundled together with many Microsoft products.

The solution is stable.

The solution offers a lot of documentation and tutorials for users to learn about various aspects and features.

The pricing is very reasonable.

What needs improvement?

The solution is not actually satisfying the complex programs that we want to execute. We're looking for alternatives right now.

Currently, Power Automate has, if I'm not wrong, about 500 actions per workflow, and my team is not satisfied as they want something very complex that automates a process end to end. That would need a lot of iteration and loops being implemented. The 500 steps in a workflow don't seem to serve our end goals.

The solution doesn't integrate very well with non-Microsoft products.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the solution for about nine months or so.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

With the processes that we've been able to implement, it has been stable. There are no bugs or glitches and it does not crash or freeze on us.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I am not sure about the scalability aspect of it as the kind of processes we've been executing has been very simple and straightforward, to be honest. We haven't tested the solution's limits.

How are customer service and technical support?

So far, we have not had an experience where we had to get in touch with the Microsoft team to resolve any issue. There is documentation that is available online and tutorials provided by Microsoft, and the community has been pretty helpful for our IT team to design these solutions. We've been able to use those resources in order to mostly figure everything out ourselves. Therefore, I can't speak to their level of helpfulness.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are using Power Automate, as it has come with the Microsoft Office 365 bundle. We aren't satisfied with it and therefore are looking for alternatives. This is our first experience with an RPA, and I don't like the app.

How was the initial setup?

I didn't directly deal with the initial implementation. I'm on the management side. I get in touch with the IT team who work with Power Automate directly.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is absolutely reasonable as you're getting a lot more than just this solution. You're not just paying for Power Automate when you're paying for it. You're paying for the bundle itself. It was basically an add-on for whatever other services we're buying. Therefore, it was more or less free for us.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are currently looking to explore other RPA options.

We have, for example, lightly explored UiPath as an option. Currently, there are a lot of processes that are being run on SAP and other infrastructure like Salesforce. Power Automate doesn't seem to be integrating well with them. We've been talking to other organizations or other partners that are using UiPath, and they've said they were able to implement somewhat similar tasks and were able to integrate easier. If the UiPath integrations are beyond the scope of Microsoft, it would be a better option.

What other advice do I have?

We are a customer and an end-user of the product.

I have very little experience working with Power Automate. I'm the management person who gets in touch with the IT team who works with Power Automate directly.

I'm not sure which version of the solution we're using.

If your organization is running on Microsoft, and purely on Microsoft architecture, Power Automate is the way to go. If you're a very big company that wants to have complex tasks executed, however, it's not the best option. We're at a stage where we're trying to reevaluate where we want to go in ahead with the RPA journey. Power Automate doesn't look like the right option, at least for us right now.

I'd rate the solution at a seven out of ten.

Good visualizations, dashboards, and scalability, but needs better user interface, rule-based security, and support

Pros and Cons

  • "Its visualizations and dashboards are most valuable. Power BI is great in terms of visualizations and dashboards. The reports that we previously had were not very nice in terms of visualization. It also provides the ability to play with the data."
  • "We have a lot of servers and applications from which we want reports, and it allows us to create reports from an SQL source or some other source."
  • "They can improve it in terms of rule-based security. Currently, it has very limited rules."
  • "They can improve the user interface a little bit to make it more user-friendly. When creating a dashboard, it is not very user-friendly. You have to click on a certain style and use your keyboard keys to move it. You cannot drag and drop it."
  • "Their technical support can be better. They normally take too long to escalate and resolve a case."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for reporting. We are using its latest version.

What is most valuable?

Its visualizations and dashboards are most valuable. Power BI is great in terms of visualizations and dashboards. The reports that we previously had were not very nice in terms of visualization. It also provides the ability to play with the data.

We have a lot of servers and applications from which we want reports, and it allows us to create reports from an SQL source or some other source.

What needs improvement?

They can improve it in terms of rule-based security. Currently, it has very limited rules.

They can improve the user interface a little bit to make it more user-friendly. When creating a dashboard, it is not very user-friendly. You have to click on a certain style and use your keyboard keys to move it. You cannot drag and drop it.

Their technical support can be better. They normally take too long to escalate and resolve a case.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Power BI for five or six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I am at the initial stage of using it. We have just deployed a report in our organization, and it is working fine so far. It seems to be stable. I am not sure if we faced any issues with it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is good in terms of scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have had only one interaction with them, and it was a bad one. They took around a month to resolve a simple issue. We also had to escalate the case. The resolution was very simple, and ideally, they should have found it on the first day. They normally take too long when it comes to the escalation of cases.

How was the initial setup?

As a first-time user, I found it to be of medium complexity. You have to connect it with the SQL database or your data source. You might not find it very straightforward.

What other advice do I have?

It can also be deployed on-premises. If you have it on-premises, make sure that you meet all the prerequisites and have all permissions. You should sort these things out before deploying Power BI. I faced some issues because I missed one of the prerequisites, and it took me one month to get it resolved. That's why I recommend completing all prerequisites.

I would rate Microsoft Power BI a seven out of ten.

Provides great container data flow and status related paginated reports

Pros and Cons

  • "Provides good data flow related to the container and control flow."
  • "There are some connector-related issues in their MSBA solution."

What is our primary use case?

One of our primary use cases is to build an MSBA-based business intelligence solution for  collection agents, so that they can receive daily information relating to bills in the form of ledgers. I've built several packages to import the data from where it has been dumped. I then created the data mask for data analysis to showcase all the outputs and conclusions. As a result, there is a clear breakdown of total collections, the different parameters, customer-based information, and other essential information. We are partners of Microsoft BI and I'm a solutions architect.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution has helped increase the client's total sales revenue for their collection agent. It's basically MSBA, plus an AIML kind of solution and it helps the client to increase the overall efficiency of their collection agents, increasing total revenue for the company.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the data flow related to the container and the control flow. Microsoft has recently introduced paginated reports in the status part. These are web-based and also mobile-based, depending upon the layout of the report. It can be easily printed in Word format as well as in layout format, regardless of size.

What needs improvement?

There are some connector-related issues in their MSBA solution and there are certain features that Microsoft should include in the MSBA solution. One is the connective level problem that we currently face from the different data sources. It provides about 80% connectivity to all the data sources, but there is the remaining 20%. They could provide some kind of additional functionality which would make it a great solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for about 18 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is pretty stable in its current form, and we are working on the same platform to optimize and incorporate everything.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This solution is fully configurable and totally scalable. We are currently expanding the solution to include the area collections managers, the territory collection managers, and the regional collection managers. There are currently close to 3,000 users who are field collection agents. There is a maintenance cost but it's pretty low because it's an on-premise solution, so there is no cost attached to the server-based maintenance. Our support team is responsible for maintenance.

The solution is currently used throughout the company although there are geographical restrictions. They plan to extend usage to a pan-country level. It will take some time to implement but we are at the end stages of deployment on the pan-country level. Once completed, we expect there will be around 15,000 users.

How are customer service and technical support?

We provide technical support as required by our clients. Urgent issues can be resolved within two or three hours.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Microsoft BI is similar to Talent and Pentaho BI but Microsoft is more competitive and flexible over the other BI solutions. We can cover up or build our end-to-end solution from scratch and that includes reporting and we don't need to go to any kind of a visualization tool for that.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was complex because the data vault was not totally structured and we needed to create some kind of a data lake, dump the data, then analyze it and create the data mask. We require certain validations and checks before importing or exporting the data as well as the application of the cubes to SSRS before reporting services. Deployment time can be dependent on the server and we have designed the system to optimize the process. We have a deployment team which can include two to three developers. Deployment takes about 10 minutes. The client decides on the deployment plan because they have applications that hang on the production server and don't want deployment to hamper other applications.

What was our ROI?

Microsoft BI is provided as a BI solution to incorporate or implement all data in a single platform. It enables you to build a data mart for your company and analyze it on a single platform. Even data analysis techniques can be carried out on this platform, and output of data can be visualized from the SSRS reporting tool. In this solution, the ROI is quite high because collection has increased up to 25% in one month compared to the same month last year.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have used a client-based service in the pricing. As yet, there are no additional costs.

What other advice do I have?

For anyone interested in building a BI solution from scratch, it's important to be aware that the data is not taken at a single platform. I believe that Microsoft BI is the best platform for this because it gives the flexibility to store the data into an SQL Server from different sources, and the ability to first dump your data into those servers. The analysis and reporting is in the same platform. Power BI has a much greater range than SSRS. Microsoft BI is a tool that gives it to you on a single platform, and you can build an end-to-end BI solution. This is not possible in Power BI.

This solution gives me the total flexibility to use my skill set, in the technical forms and in the analysis form, in one go. I can do several things on a single platform regarding the data science, as well as the data analysis, pulling information, analyzing data, transforming data, creating data lakes, data warehouse, and data masks, all in a single platform.

I rate this solution a nine out of 10.

Has a single sign-on functionality and a user friendly interface

Pros and Cons

  • "I think the single sign-on functionality and the ease with which you can deposit things on the cloud have been valuable. Azure has very robust security functionalities and authentication features, which come with mobility, along with backup and credential checks."
  • "Integration with other services could be much better."

What is our primary use case?

We have a complete Microsoft ecosystem. Azure comes with a variety of parts such as infrastructure as a service and platform as a service or SaaS. We are using it for infrastructure as a service and software as a service as well, so both SaaS and IaaS are being used.

All of our solutions are being deployed on the Azure server. We use the Azure authentication functionality across our organization, which is a single sign-on functionality, so it is Azure-based. We also are incorporating the DevOps framework, which, again, is being integrated to Azure. Our complete backbone is being moved to Azure, and most of our systems are moving to the cloud version.

What is most valuable?

I think the single sign-on functionality and the ease with which you can deposit things on the cloud have been valuable.

Azure has very robust security functionalities and authentication features, which come with mobility, along with backup and credential checks.

Scalability is also very robust because you can deploy the solutions on the go, and along with that, it provides you an ecosystem to integrate with the existing Microsoft products. For example, we have Power BI, and it's very nicely integrated with the Azure cloud version.

The interface is quite user friendly and intuitive. The reporting is perfect as well.

What needs improvement?

Integration with other services could be much better.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Microsoft Azure for over two years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is very good. As it is a Microsoft product, the reliability is very good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Because it's a cloud-based solution, scalability is not an issue at all. We currently have over 200 development team members using Microsoft Azure.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support staff have been responsive, and the support was good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was a bit complex. It was getting ruled out sometimes, but it was at a Pan-India level. So, it was expected to take some time; it took about 8 to 12 months. Overall, it was good.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I believe that we have a three-year license, and I'm happy with the pricing.

What other advice do I have?

I think Azure works best when you have the complete Microsoft ecosystem. Then, you get the real value out of it. In my firm, we have the complete enterprise licensing model. So, we have an integrated ecosystem, which provides a very collaborative way of working, along with the ease of creating.

If I were to rate Microsoft Azure on a scale from one to ten, I would rate it at nine.

Easy to create automated workflows, good integration with Microsoft tools, and stable and scalable

Pros and Cons

  • "The best part is the automated workflow, which is quite good and easy. It is just drag-and-drop. We are able to create workflows quite quickly. We are able to directly integrate the data that it generates with Power BI dashboards. Its integration is quite good with other Microsoft tools, such as Power BI. The visualization of the data has become helpful for us."
  • "Microsoft shouldn't charge extra for the database license if you want to store the data in the database during the trial. We wanted to have a historical trend of the data, and we started with the trial version of the tool. The database license is not included with the trial version, and you have to purchase it separately. Because we had a budget constraint, we had to pull all the information manually from the system, massage it, and push it to the dashboard. About two months ago, we have upgraded to the full-fledged version in which the database is integrated. The database license should be there in the trial version, but they have totally decoupled it. They should have provided a bundle, at least for the trial version, so that once a person or a firm gets a sense of it, they can start building. It might be because they wanted to sell additional licenses or premium licenses, and that's why they have added it in the premium version. It should have more cognitive features. Automation Anywhere and UiPath are different because they have cognitive functionality plus intelligent automation. The cognitive functionality is currently not there in Microsoft Power Automate. It is just for workflow automation and basic bot-level tasks. It should have more cognitive features, which probably will be launched in a couple of years."

What is our primary use case?

We have been using Power Automate specifically for the COVID situation. The use case is mainly to automatically fire an e-mail every Monday morning requesting the employees of our firm to provide a response regarding their well-being. After the data is captured by using an MS form, the subsequent workflows get triggered through Power Automate. If somebody has mentioned that they have a fever or shortness of breath, we send this person's entry to our health and safety officer and our plan manager. All this is automated.

We also have another use case related to procurement where an automated flow was required for invoice processing for an external vendor.

How has it helped my organization?

We have been able to automate the form filling, form dispatch, and data collection activities, specifically for the COVID situation, across all offices within our firm. It is a global process covering all zones such as Europe, India, and Australia. We have also been able to define workflows for particular use cases, such as when there is a high volume of cases in a specific zone, such as India. We have created workflows so that our emergency team is directly able to connect with the R3 team that directly connects with the employee to provide the required support.

We have also gone a bit far with respect to the access part. The Power Automate flow also connects with the physical gates of our offices. Last year, we were able to control our physical gates with the data generated by the Power Automated workflow. We were prohibiting or allowing the entry of the people based on their responses that they had put in the Monday morning form. It was quite a complex use case, but we were able to roll it out globally, and it has helped a lot with the COVID situation.

What is most valuable?

The best part is the automated workflow, which is quite good and easy. It is just drag-and-drop. We are able to create workflows quite quickly.

We are able to directly integrate the data that it generates with Power BI dashboards. Its integration is quite good with other Microsoft tools, such as Power BI. The visualization of the data has become helpful for us.

What needs improvement?

Microsoft shouldn't charge extra for the database license if you want to store the data in the database during the trial. It should have more cognitive features. Automation Anywhere and UiPath are different because they have cognitive functionality plus intelligent automation. The cognitive functionality is currently not there in Microsoft Power Automate. It is just for workflow automation and basic bot-level tasks. It should have more cognitive features, which probably will be launched in a couple of years.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for the past one and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is quite a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. There is no doubt about Microsoft products in terms of scalability. Because of its scalability, we are able to have use cases that require a higher load.

From the build perspective, only our team builds it. We have around 10 to 12 developers who create and support Power Automate solutions. In terms of its usage, we are currently using it only for two use cases. We also have other tools, but we are using Power Automate for the use cases with less budget. Its license cost is comparatively less as compared to Automation Anywhere.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have annual support, and there is also a community. My team connected with the community forums, and most of the things got resolved there. They connected with the support once for an issue, which got resolved. Their support is good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are also using Automation Anywhere, but we needed a tool that is cheaper than Automation Anywhere. Power Automate fits there well.

How was the initial setup?

Its deployment was quite easy. We already have Microsoft suite across our company. Our complete ecosystem is Microsoft-based, so it was not a challenge. It took one or two days to get things in place. For complete documentation and implementation, it hardly took two weeks.

What about the implementation team?

As per our current agreement, Microsoft is supposed to provide support. So, we had an external consultant who helped us out.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Its licensing cost is comparatively less as compared to Automation Anywhere. We have bought a two-year license agreement.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to others. It is one of the powerful tools. The best part is that it fits very well with the Microsoft ecosystem. It is not at the same level as Automation Anywhere and UiPath, but being a Microsoft product, I see a bright future for this. In one and a half years, it will be one of the key players in the RPA industry.

I would rate Microsoft Power Automate an eight out of ten.

Stable, efficient and has a straightforward setup

Pros and Cons

  • "We found the initial setup to be straightforward."
  • "The solution could use a faster speed on certain interactions and a refresh of the dashboards."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution across many company verticals and within every area of the company - including finance, accounting, operations, logistics, HR, et cetera.

How has it helped my organization?

In general, it's helping companies be more efficient, more productive.

What is most valuable?

There's not one specific feature we prefer. I would say it depends on the customer and the processes. What is important to one user may not be as important to another. There's no one feature that excels over another so that we don't see it like second place.

The product offers very good efficiency.

The solution is very stable.

The solution can scale well.

The documentation on offer is good.

We found the initial setup to be straightforward.

What needs improvement?

In Power BI, it would be ideal if we had the capability to import data with forms or similar methods.

It would be nice to have the ability to have a service price to offer customers of Power BI, without having the customer be part of Power BI, I would say. Maybe that could help us consult the suppliers.

The solution could use a faster speed on certain interactions and a refresh of the dashboards. It can sometimes get a bit slow.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been dealing with the solution for about five years or so. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is extremely stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's very reliable in terms of performance, but it is slow sometimes.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is easily scaled.

Most of our clients are quite large companies. The companies we deal with have thousands of users, however, only a few really use Power BI. Typically only the supervisors and managers use it, not everyone.

How are customer service and technical support?

We've never used customer support. We haven't needed to reach out to them.

The documentation on offer is okay. It can help you troubleshoot or learn about the product.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also work with Tableau and and QlikView alongside Microsoft. We do use some others, however, to a much lesser extent.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. The deployment takes a good two days to finalize.

In terms of maintenance, we have a support team that covers all of our customers. There isn't really that much that needs to be done.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are less expensive options on offer.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Tableau is always one of the solutions we would like to evaluate further, and ClickView is another one.

It is my understanding that ClickView is less expensive, whereas Tableau is more expensive. Really, the reason why most companies go through Microsoft is if they have a Microsoft Business Suite or Office and it's all tied in the same ecosystem. That's perhaps the biggest benefit. It's all within the same ecosystem.

What other advice do I have?

We are consultants and implementers so we usually resell software. We do the end-to-end automation for customers as well. In the case of Microsoft BI, our clients are the ones that buy the license and use it. We don't necessarily use it directly.

We're always working off the latest version, as the solution is constantly updated online.

I would recommend the solution to other companies and users.

I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten.

Straightforward to set up, stable, easy to use, and well-compliments a solution that includes a relational database

Pros and Cons

  • "Cosmos DB is stable and easy to use."
  • "Better documentation on how to integrate with other components would be helpful because I was struggling with this."

What is our primary use case?

Cosmos DB is a non-relational, NoSQL database. We are a solution provider and we implement this product for our clients. It is used for integrating and managing unstructured data such as videos, pictures, and other big objects that you cannot include in a standard database tablet. It is made for these kinds of activities.

Some of our customers include banks, where together with their main relational database, it provides a place for keeping track of unstructured data. The relational database is used to store the regular data, whereas Cosmos DB stores what is unstructured.

I also use this product for my own purposes.

What is most valuable?

Cosmos DB is stable and easy to use.

What needs improvement?

Better documentation on how to integrate with other components would be helpful because I was struggling with this. For example, I had trouble finding information on how to integrate with other Microsoft components. Also, consider a situation where you want to use Cosmos DB to manage the uploading of data to your website. Information on how to do things like this should be readily available.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB for less than a month.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Cloud-based solutions like Cosmos DB are quite stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable product. When I originally used it on the cloud, Microsoft Azure, I tried changing a lot of things such as increasing the memory to see how it performed. The response was quite good.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is good and they are responsive.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to Cosmos DB, was using MySQL, but it isn't a non-relational database.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. It was complete in about five minutes.

What about the implementation team?

I deployed it myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is a licensing fee.

What other advice do I have?

This is a good product and I recommend it, especially in cases where people want to keep their information outside of the organization and on the cloud.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Microsoft Azure

A complete ecosystem with an builtin ETL tool, good integrations with python and R, and support of DAX and Power Query (M languages)

Pros and Cons

  • "Power BI is a complete ecosystem. It has an integrated ETL tool and good connectivity with applications such as Office 365 and SQL. There are also solutions for RPA, such as Microsoft Power Automate and Microsoft Power Apps. Power BI now has integration with Power Query, which has an AI feature for text analytics. Text analytics is a very good feature. This feature is also there in Tableau, but I like it in Power BI because you can write something like, "What is the total sale in the Eastern region?", and it will give you the answer. For example, when you have different types of user opinions, you just run one algorithm and you will have the output that provides the number of positive and negative responses. You can even have a dashboard with positive remarks. This feature has been introduced recently. Power BI supports the DAX and Power Query M languages. These languages are making Power BI very strong in data analytics, and you can do many types of analysis."
  • "It should be more user-friendly. There are very small or tiny icons that you need to move very carefully. If you go a little bit up and down, some of the values change. Its user interface should be improved. It should be like Tableau. Its performance is also slow and should be improved. I definitely feel some sort of speed issues with Power BI. The integration of Excel with Power BI would also be good."

What is our primary use case?

Tariq: I am currently using it for my professional and training use. I am using the Power BI Premium per user recent scheme announced by Microsoft. In my current company, we are using Tableau.

What is most valuable?

Tariq: I’m going to go cover my TOP 5 Features for getting you started on your own visualisations so you can be up and running and leveraging Power BI within your own business in no time at all. Power BI Desktop Sure you probably want to build some beautiful and interactive reports and dashboards to share all those insights from your data with your business, but perhaps lacking the experience that report designers, data queries specialists or Excel Power Users have? Well now all your end users can easily access data and build their own reports using a simple yet powerful interface, Power BI Desktop. Power BI Desktop is a free download which provides an excellent canvas for creating your own masterpiece’s or perhaps just a simple report or dashboard tile. Power BI Desktop with its monthly release cycle is constantly evolving with newly added features or enhancements that can ‘bring data alive’ often in just a few minutes or hours. Visibility Data is arguably one of most precious resource that businesses are generating today. The key aim to be able to manipulate and easily combine this valuable data with other datasets, and then have a simple way to gain a deeper understanding of their business. With data often residing across multiple systems and formats, a valuable resource that businesses need is to be able to collate the various datasets and generate different ways to visual and understand it. In order to identify trends and relationships which were not previously visible and help make those important DECISIONS that business need to make every day based on the right facts. With a deeper understanding that comes from interpreting data in a visual form, the data world has become even more important for a business to be able to leverage and gain the competitive edge it needs; so it’s no wonder that Microsoft’s BI can provide so much value with the data-shaping and modelling capabilities to unlock hidden insights. Custom Visualisations Every business has its own culture and way of doing things, sometimes the ‘standard way’ of doing something just doesn’t cut it and a need to customise it to make it work is needed. The same goes for visualisations that come as standard with Power BI tool, which for some may not provide the depth or complexity of visualisation that is needed in order to ‘bring data alive’. However by accessing the growing library of custom visualisations or even creating ones that meet a specific need is perhaps a way to find a competitive edge. Import Excel Data One of the recent improvements that was added was the ability to import data from Excel. It has a wizard for making it very straight forward so your Excel ‘Power User’s’ now have even greater functionality to make sense of the data. Power Q&A Have you wanted to be able to ask questions in your own language and have it answered? Now Power BI makes that very easy with the Dashboard Power Q&A and the underlying data models. You just start typing in your question and the data model provides the context and answer which can then be manipulated to suit your own visualisation needs.

What needs improvement?

me to throw some light on the disadvantages of Power BI.

Power BI is good with handling simple relationships between tables in a data model. But, if there are complex relationships between tables, that is, if they have more than one links between tables, Power BI might not handle them well. You need to create a data model carefully by having more unique fields so that Power BI does not confuse the relationships when it comes to complex relationships.

In most cases, you might not feel the need to configure and optimize visualizations in Power BI. But even if you do, Power BI does not provide many options to configure your visualizations as per your requirements. Thus, users have limited options for what they can change in visuals.

The user interface of Power BI is often found crowded and bulky by the users. It is in the sense that there are many icons of options that block the view of dashboard or report. Most users wish that the user interface or the report canvas was clearer with fewer icons and options. Also, creating scrolling dashboards is a native feature.

As we know, the expression language used to deal with data in Power BI is DAX. However, you can perform a lot of actions using the DAX formula in Power BI, it is still not the easiest language to work with. Sometimes the formulas you create work well in Power BI, sometimes they don’t. You can concatenate up to two elements but concatenating more than two elements needs nesting statements.

Power BI has a limit of ingesting data at a time which is approximately 2 GBs of data. If you wish to import and use data of even greater volumes, you need to extend your free version to a paid version of Power BI. Also, users have reported that Power BI takes a little more than usual time or even hangs while processing millions of rows and columns of data.

Usually, Power BI is the easiest to use BI tool if you are using it simply to import data and create reports. But Power BI is an entire suite having a lot of other interrelated tools. When the purpose of your use is more than just creating reports in Power BI Desktop, you need to learn and master several other tools like Gateways, Power BI Report Server, Power BI Services, etc.

For how long have I used the solution?

Tariq: I have been using this solution for more than three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Tariq:

I am currently using it for my personal training, and I didn't find any stability issues, but when it comes to big data, there may be some sort of issues where the system might hang.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Tariq:

In terms of adding more users, there shouldn't be any issues or limitations. Currently, I am using it for my personal use.

For very big companies with large-scale data and many rules, there would be speed issues with Power BI. Therefore, I don't recommend Power BI at this level. For such organizations, Tableau is the best solution. I have tried Tableau in many companies with many nodes, and I found no speed issues with Tableau. So, I won't recommend Power BI for organizations where 2,000 or 4,000 computers are connected, and there are multiple branches with data coming from different countries.

How are customer service and technical support?

Tariq:

I contacted them for an installation issue related to the RPA Power Automate Desktop. I had downloaded this software, and I was trying to use it with Office, but there were some installation issues. I contacted Microsoft's technical team, and they logged in to my computer and fixed the issue.

Their support is very nice. They called me and then remotely connected to my computer through Teams. They gave me very good support, and I am perfectly satisfied with them.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Tariq: I can mentions main difference between Power BI and tableau which is as under. Advantages of Tableau Here, are pros/benefits of using Tableau BI: •Less cost of training •Very fast and easy to create visualizations •Good customer support •Data Interpreter Story-telling ability •Tableau offers a feature of visualization •It helps you to combine shape & clean the data for analysis. •It helps you to handle a large amount of data. •Uses scripting languages like R & Python to avoid performance for complex table calculations. •Allows users to create reports, dashboards, and stories using Tableau Desktop. Advantages of Power BI Here, are pros/benefits of Power BI •Offers pre-built dashboards and reports for SaaS Solutions •Provide real-time dashboard updates. •Secure and reliable connection to your data sources in the cloud or on-premises •Power BI offers quick deployment, hybrid configuration, and a secure environment. •Data exploration using natural language query. •Feature for dashboard visualization •New features frequently added that are great for excel users. •Extensive database connectivity capabilities Q&A feature publish to the web. •integration with both Python and R coding to use visualizations. •Power Query provides many options related to wrangling and clean the data. •Post publishing the data into Power BI web service can schedule refresh without manual intervention. •Power BI backed by the superpower of with artificial intelligence and machine learning. Disadvantages of Power BI Here, are cons/drawbacks of Power BI •Dashboards and reports only shared with users having the same email domains. •Power Bl will never mix imported data, which is accessed from real-time connections. •Power BI can't accept file size larger than 1 GB. •Dashboard never accept or pass user, account, or other entity parameters. Disadvantages of Tableau Here, are cons/drawbacks of Tableau •Relatively high cost •No change management or versioning •It is expensive, BI, when compared to other tools. •Importing custom visualization is a bit difficult. •Not offers easy methods for embedding reports to other applications. •Tableau is suitable only for a large organization which can pay for licensing cost. •The tableau does not offer support for artificial intelligence and machine learning. •There is integration with other Microsoft products like Power Apps , Dynamics 365, Office 365, and Microsoft Flow, which uses Single Sign-On (SSO).

How was the initial setup?

Tariq:

Its initial setup is very simple. There is no issue at all. If you have everything set up on your computer, it takes only 10 minutes.

In terms of maintenance, Power BI does not require any maintenance, but the database behind Power BI requires some sort of maintenance. Power BI is like a tap. It is just providing what is in the tank. For clean water, you just need to clean the tank at the back. To get good visualizations, you need to clean your database, tabling structure, and data modeling. If you are doing all data modeling in Power BI, then data modeling requires some sort of maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Tariq: Power BI comes in three levels – Desktop, Pro, and Premium. The Desktop level is free for individual users. Pro – The Pro plan costs $9.99 per user, per month and includes a mobile app, the ability to publish and share reports, a 1 GB model size limit, eight data refreshes daily, the ability to connect to over 100 data sources, embedded APIs and controls, AI visuals, data security and encryption, metrics for content creation and publishing and up to 10 GB per user maximum storage. Pro is available for free for companies that have the Microsoft 365 E5 solution. Premium (per user) – Microsoft launched this new pricing strategy that costs $20 per user, per month. It includes all of the features of the Pro plan, plus paginated reports, a 100 GB model size limit, 48 data refreshes daily, advanced AI features, XMLA endpoint read/write connectivity, data flows, the ability to analyze data stored in Azure Data Lake Storage, application lifecycle management and up to 100 TB of maximum storage. Premium (per capacity) – This plan starts at $4,995 per month per dedicated cloud compute and storage resource. It includes all of the features of the Premium per user plan, plus on-premise reporting, a 400 GB model limit, multi-location deployment management, Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) and autoscale add-on.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Tariq: No, I am diehard fan and accredited professional of Microsoft technologies, so I have no other thought.

What other advice do I have?

Tariq: I will suggest below guidelines to Power BI users. Limit the number of visuals in dashboards and reports According to Microsoft's Optimization guide for Power BI, placing many visuals in a single report slows report performance. Limit widget visuals to eight per report page and grids to one per page. Limit pages 30 points (cards: 1, gauges: 2, charts: 3, maps: 3, grids: 5). Limit tiles to 10 per dashboard. To improve Power BI report performance, remove unnecessary interactions between visuals By default, all visuals on a report page can interact with one another. For optimal report performance, interactivity should be minimized. Reduce the number of queries fired at the back end and improve report performance by disabling unnecessary interactivity. Enable Row-Level Security (RLS) Row Level Security restricts user access to certain rows in a database depending on the characteristics (role) of the user executing a query. With RLS, Power BI only imports data the user is authorized to view. Combining Power BI roles with roles in the back end can result in substantial performance gains. Test all roles before rolling out to production. Use Microsoft AppSource certified custom visuals Power BI certified visuals are AppSource visuals that have passed rigorous quality testing. Microsoft verifies that certified custom visuals have robust, high-performance code. Certified custom visuals are the only custom visuals that can be viewed in Export to PowerPoint mode and email subscriptions. Use preview feature of hierarchy slicers instead of custom visual If you need to show hierarchy in slicers, enable the preview feature provided by the Power BI desktop instead of using of a custom visual. Provide data categorization for Power BI reports (HBI, MBI, LBI) High Business Impact (HBI) data requires users to get a policy exception to share the data externally. Low Business Impact (LBI) and Medium Business Impact (MBI) data do not require exceptions. By using Power BI data sensitivity labels, you raise user awareness about required security and how reports should be shared inside and outside the organization. Use on-premises data gateway instead of Personal Gateway Personal Gateway takes data and imports it into Power BI. Enterprise Gateway (on-premises data gateway) imports nothing, which is more efficient when working with large databases. Use different Power BI gateways for Live Connection and Scheduled Data Refresh If the same gateway is used for Scheduled Data Refresh and Live Connection, Live Connection performance will slow down when Scheduled Data Refresh is active. Avoid this issue by creating separate gateways for Live Connection and Scheduled Data Refresh. Test custom visual performance on reports to ensure fast report load time; use an alternative visual if the chosen visual performs poorly Uncertified custom visuals are generally not tested by the Power BI team. Custom visuals can perform poorly when handling large datasets or complex aggregations. If a custom visual performs poorly, consider replacing it with a different visual. Limit complicated complex measures and aggregations in data models Push calculated columns and measures to the source where possible. The closer they are to the source, the higher the likelihood of improved performance. Create calculated measures instead of calculated columns. Use star schema to design data models. Use slicers sparingly Slicers are a great way of allowing users to navigate data, but they come at a performance cost. Each slicer generates two queries: one gets the data, and the other fetches selection details. Creating too many slicers negatively impacts performance. To evaluate which slicers are infrequently used, use the Filter pane and remove unnecessary slicers. Ensure the Power BI report and data source are in the same region With the tenant and data source in the same region, you can reduce network latency. The results are faster data transfer and faster query execution. Import only necessary fields and tables instead of entire datasets Ensure the model is as narrow and lean as possible. Power BI works on columnar indexes; longer and leaner tables are preferred. Ensure the cache update frequency aligns with the data source refresh frequency Cache update frequency should be set at similar intervals to data source refresh frequency. By default, the Power BI cache update frequency is set to one hour. If, for example, your data set refreshes only once per day, you should update the cache frequency accordingly. Use white or light background colors For users distributing printed reports, white or light backgrounds are printer friendly. Shorten numbers Don’t exceed three or four numerals when displaying numbers. Display measures to one or two numerals left of the decimal point and scale for thousands or millions. Use Report Tooltip pages to provide more context for the highlighted measure Report tooltips are a great way of sharing additional information on the metric. Use limited visuals in Report Tooltip. Ensure you select Tooltip field carefully (categorical or measure). Use templates (.PBIT files) to speed up and standardize report development instead of starting with an empty .PBIX Templates can be saved with custom color palettes and themes pre-incorporated. Templates ensure corporate branding is pre-applied to all pages. Templates ensure connections to commonly used data sources are already in place. Templates create commonly used DAX measures. Source: LinkedIn Use names that are meaningful to your business users or intended audience Power BI provides the ability to give aliases to report objects. Avoid ambiguity when naming columns and measures. Consider hiding unused columns in the data model. Source: LinkedIn Reduce queries Reduce the number of queries sent by Power BI using the settings for Slicers and Filters.

Excellent user interface and portal; provides great documentation

Pros and Cons

  • "User interface and portal are great."
  • "Azure calculator could be improved, there are issues with login synchronization."

What is our primary use case?

I'm currently trying to build a new product for my company using Microsoft Azure. Prior to that, I was using Microsoft Azure on the cloud to deploy microservices using specific Azure services to host the microservices. But the most common Azure services that we're using is the App Service and relational databases. In terms of the application, the first one was just the Microsoft Azure application and the second one was an integration with Elastic Stack. I'm a software architect.

What is most valuable?

The user interface offers a good experience, it's better than Azure itself. The portal is great. Microsoft Azure has very good documentation for any kind of technical person.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes the Azure Calculator doesn't have a good way to do a higher estimate, because for any organization there are sometimes issues with the application sites, but I know that the logs are not the real time and there are issues with login synchronization. It cam sometimes take more than five minutes for that information to reach the Azure application side. I'd like to see integration with other lifecycle managing rules because with Azure DevOps, it's straightforward, but the system is painful sometimes.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for nearly five years, the last 12 months in this new company.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In general, stability is good, but in the past month I had some issues with the connection to Azure resources, not just Microsoft Azure, but with Azure in general. Microsoft has an issue with its authentication system which has proved painful, because my applications were up and running, but I can't log in to make changes or see metrics. It's a lot better now, we've had the application down three or four times but it hasn't been critical.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is good, I haven't had any issues with their configuration. I think we have around 600 concurrent users.

How are customer service and technical support?

I haven't used Azure support. They have good documentation, although I sometimes think that the examples on GitHub aren't updated. On the whole, documentation is good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used AWS but we knew there was already a lot of experience with Microsoft Azure and their technologies and we wanted to use all the features for each service. Given that this is with government and the integration is with Microsoft Azure, we can use all the features and benefits of each service. Another issue is that they were using AWS with infrastructure as a service, but they redesigned this application to use software as a service and platform as a service. We dropped the use of infrastructure as a service and using the platform as a service, and it was estimated that it would cost less than with AWS.

How was the initial setup?

I think the initial setup is straightforward. I have around 20 microservices, so deployment took probably two weeks. It took longer than a previous implementation which took several hours.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did a quick check with cloud computing, but we didn't find anything really efficient outside of the Google Kubernetes Engine that was better than the Azure Kubernetes Service or the Kubernetes service in AWS. But it was just a quick check and it was documented.

What other advice do I have?

I can sometimes see that Microsoft has poor training, but to be honest the whole training thing isn't good at a technical level. They are designed to be the entrance point and show the way you can create a web portal and database. But if they could offer an in-depth technical solution of Azure services that would be good. It's possible that Google has something about it and they can offer better learning than Microsoft sometimes does. Reading through their documentation can take some time.

I rate this solution a nine out of 10.

A reliable, stable, and scalable solution that meets our needs and is easy to implement and use

Pros and Cons

  • "There are many useful features. We use web apps, so instead of starting a web server, we just have machines running some web services. This was helpful for us in terms of the scalability of the application. We also use Active Directory for authentication and some services for the data backup. It is a very good and reliable solution. It was easy to implement this solution. It fits very well into our plans and covers our needs to provide infrastructure in the cloud. The portal to configure new resources is very easy, and it is very easy to allocate new resources."
  • "We would like it to be cheaper. As a customer, we always want to pay less."

What is our primary use case?

Our production system is on Microsoft Azure. We are using the latest version of this solution.

We have services for the data in the SQL Server database. We also have servers for our web-based applications. All transactions occur in this environment. We also have a mirror environment in Azure, which is a different cloud geographically.

What is most valuable?

There are many useful features.

The portal to configure new resources is very easy, and it is very easy to allocate new resources.

What needs improvement?

We would like it to be cheaper. As a customer, we always want to pay less.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution since 2013.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In the past, they had some major outages, but it is a pretty stable platform.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is very scalable. It is as easy as assigning more resources, but it also depends on the architecture. If you have web apps or microservices, it is easy to implement a kind of dynamic or elastic growth. When you have a lot of activities, Azure will automatically assign more resources, which is pretty convenient.

We have around 200 users in our company, but we also have a merchant network that uses our system. This network has about 1,000 users.

How are customer service and technical support?

We had to escalate one case with the Microsoft team because we lost the connection with a data store. We got a response back within an hour of the event, and it was normal. Their service is fine in this regard. You can also have a better support contract, but what we have is enough for our purposes and needs.

How was the initial setup?

It is pretty easy. You just have to follow the step-by-step guidelines. The deployment happens almost immediately. If you need to increase or upgrade a server or have a new server, you just go to the portal and create a new resource, such as a server or a disk. It is very fast. There is no waiting time at all.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Its price can be cheaper. Price is always an issue. We pay around $10,000 per month for all resources.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are launching a new platform for software as a service. We create our software, and for a new concept and architecture, we are comparing AWS with Azure. We are exploring AWS. It is a different stack, and we don't have much experience with it. So far, we don't have a lot of information about production on AWS because the product is not live yet. It will take a couple of months to be finished.

What other advice do I have?

It is a good solution. If you have any on-premise applications, you have to be very careful about the architecture. What you don't want to do is copy what you have in your data center and put it on the cloud because there are various alternatives once you are in the cloud. Therefore, I would recommend others to review the architecture and take advantage of the features that it provides.

I would rate Microsoft Azure a nine out of ten. We are happy with Microsoft and this solution.

A cloud-based mobile device management solution with a good conditional access feature

Pros and Cons

  • "I like that we can implement conditional access."
  • "It would be better if they can reduce the cost of the license."

What is our primary use case?

I work for Mastersystem Infotama who is a Microsoft partner. I am an engineer, and I deploy Microsoft Intune in several companies. Our customers use Intune for their mobile device management. We also use Intune to protect devices accessing the application's corporate data. First, you must be compliant with the same criteria. If users connect with the corporate IP address, they only connect with username and password. But if they connect from a coffee shop IP address or IP addresses that aren't corporate, they will have to engage in multi-factor authentication.

What is most valuable?

I like that we can implement conditional access. Microsoft has conditional access for mobile device management, and we can categorize it as a corporate application or a personal application. We can protect it so users cannot copy from the corporate application to the personal application, but users can copy from the personal application to the corporate application.

We can also make one file with different permission for different people. The name of the feature is Microsoft Azure Information Protection. We can configure it to help the user work from home. They can download the file, and they can operate this file in another place, but the corporate organization still protects it.

We can also protect user access from a mobile phone. They cannot save the file to internal storage for the mobile phone. They only can save the file to OneDrive or SharePoint drive.

What needs improvement?

It would be better if Microsoft can reduce the cost of the license. as we know the Intune device subscription is licensed per device at a cost of $2 a month. but for the best to enhanced security and feature we must added add-on license or buy/upgrade to bundling license such as M365E5.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Microsoft Intune is a core product, and it's very stable

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is good. It can adopt Android and iOS and manage macOS. We couldn't support macOS two years ago, but now we can.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is good. We get help from Microsoft support. For Microsoft Intune, if we buy the license, we can get support for free. We can create tickets for the problems. We can also report the problem in the Microsoft portal.

How was the initial setup?

Microsoft Intune is essentially software as a service for mobile device management. To configure Microsoft Intune, we only have to register the domain name and register the DNS. We can log in to enroll the device with Microsoft Intune. After we register the DNS and the domain name, we configure the policies. All policies like user access and permissions. After that, the admin can send the license to every user.

The configuration takes one to five days. But it takes a long time to educate the users on how they can use it. This is because some things change after we implement Intune. Users may complain that they can't do what they did before, but it's better from a security perspective.

Microsoft will maintain it. The customer only maintains the policy and the license.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price could be better. Microsoft Intune pricing is based on the number of users. Every user license is for 15 devices. consists of 5 devices for PC (Windows or Mac), 5 tablets, and 5 mobile phones (Android and iOS).

My customers already know and use Microsoft, so they adopted Intune. They use Office 365 for secure collaboration between organizations. Microsoft is the preferred choice and has user confidence to work together securely.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

MobileIron has two types of licenses. One is a SaaS-based model, and they provide support, and the other is a license for the on-premise solution. Microsoft Intune offers only a cloud solution.

What other advice do I have?

If a customer already uses a Microsoft solution like Microsoft Office, or an email solution like Microsoft Exchange, it's better to use Microsoft Intune. But if they want an on-premise solution, they can choose another solution like  Mobile Iron or Airwatch solution.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Microsoft Intune a nine.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Flexible, great for patching on virtual machines, and pretty stable

Pros and Cons

  • "It's helped us solve problems surrounding patching, installing, and reporting different patches, etc., on the virtual machines."
  • "Based on my experience with SCCM 2016, the main, big issue is not having a good user-friendly environment. It needs much better GUI."

What is our primary use case?

We are using SCCM to manage the virtual machine configuration. We had around 100 or 200 virtual machines and wireless, and we need to configure different settings on all of the virtual machines. We need to handle patching, updating, and installing security updates. We prefer to use System Center instead of other solutions like GFI LanGuard that are already installed in other environments.

How has it helped my organization?

Previous to SCCM, the entire process was completely manual.

What is most valuable?

The solution is very flexible and very handy. It has helped us move past the process of manually updating.

It's helped us solve problems surrounding patching, installing, and reporting different patches, etc., on the virtual machines.

What needs improvement?

Based on my experience with SCCM 2016, the main, big issue is not having a good user-friendly environment. It needs much better GUI.

We had some problems configuring Linux virtual machines. We needed to install agents. Microsoft should pay more attention to these Linux virtual machines in order to make implementation with them easier.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working in the System Center on two projects for around two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is extremely stable. We've only really had to restart the solution twice in the first year. It's very reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In terms of scalability, at that time I didn't need to scale the development. However, in the near future, it is possible. I don't have any idea of the timeline for our scaling the solution as I focus on VMware technology at this time.

Our company has around 60 users. However, we offer this solution to one of the enterprise customers that use it for bank data centers. They have around 3000 staff.

We are using the System Center to manage around 2000 virtual machines.

How are customer service and technical support?

In my country, due to sanctions, we cannot use direct support. We just use third-party partners in different countries. Generally, we support the System Center and all their products directly and don't need outside support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

If a company migrates to a cloud environment, I prefer to use another solution. For example, in the Azure environment, I definitely use Intune instead of System Center. In other products, I use Jamf, which is a good product that is comparable with System Center in the cloud environment.

How was the initial setup?

In terms of the current initial setup, the new version is a little bit more complex as you need to design a great architecture for the enterprise environment when we use a lot of virtual machines. For example, when you have more than 1,000 virtual machines, there needs to be a high level of consideration for the design of different components of the System Center.

In terms of deployment, if you have a good design, the process may take about a week. You need, I would guess, one week for installing and preparing the environment. However, you need to relay different instructions in order to install it. In total, the process would take around one, or, at a maximum, two weeks.

Our team consists of five members; one senior and four support engineers. Their job is to configure and maintain the active directory environment and the SCCM platform.

What about the implementation team?

I implemented the solution myself. I took a month to study the solution, and, after that, I was able to handle the process personally. I took only two days in terms of how long it took me to install it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is pretty expensive. A company really needs to consider their environment.

What other advice do I have?

We're just a customer. In the past, we used System Center version 2012, and after one year we upgraded to System Center 2016.

Out of all the products in the market, the best solution is System Center, especially for Microsoft virtual machines and all services that are related to Microsoft Technologies.

If you are evolving in the Microsoft environment, I prefer to use the System Center due to the fact that it includes different solutions like System Center Configuration Manager, System Center Operation Manager, System Center Virtual Backup. It's a full solution and provides different services. It has great integration with other Microsoft products.

I would recommend the solution to an engineer or administrator. And first, a new user will have to study different best practices and have a good overview of the architect of System Center and the functionality of the different components. After that, they would have to go in through the details about the Linux machines. The biggest problems we had at the time of implementation was related to Linux virtual machines, not Microsoft virtual machines. With the licensing and the price, it's a tricky point that the engineers should consider when they need to set up a license

Overall, I would rate the solution eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Pros and Cons

  • "Azure Data Factory's most valuable features are the packages and the data transformation that it allows us to do, which is more drag and drop, or a visual interface. So, that eases the entire process."
  • "We are too early into the entire cycle for us to really comment on what problems we face. We're mostly using it for transformations, like ETL tasks. I think we are comfortable with the facts or the facts setting. But for other parts, it is too early to comment on."

What is our primary use case?

Azure Data Factory is for data transformation and data loading. It works from your transaction systems, and we are using it for our HRMS, Human Resource Capital Management System. It picks up all the transactional data pick and moves into the Azure Data Warehouse. From there, we would like to create reports in terms of our financial positions and our resource utilization project. These are the reports that we need to build onto the warehouse.

The purpose of Azure Data Factory is more about transformations, so it doesn't need to have a good dashboard. But, it has a feeding user interface for us to do our activities and debug actions. I think that's good enough.

What is most valuable?

Azure Data Factory's most valuable features are the packages and the data transformation that it allows us to do, which is more drag and drop, or a visual interface. So, that eases the entire process.

Azure Data Factory setup is quite user-friendly.

I am happy with the interface.

What needs improvement?

We are too early into the entire cycle for us to really comment on what problems we face. We're mostly using it for transformations, like ETL tasks. I think we are comfortable with the facts or the facts setting. But for other parts, it is too early to comment on.

We are still in the development phase, testing it on a very small set of data, maybe then the neatest four or bigger set of data. Then, you might get some pain points once we put it in place and run it. That's when it will be more effective for me to answer that.

For how long have I used the solution?

We are building Azure Data Factory right now internally to extract data from our transactional systems and put them into the warehouse so that the reporting engine can be built too.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not tried it scaling up. But, Azure promises the stability and scalability should not be an issue.

From a development perspective, I think there were four developers who use Azure Data Factory. From a warehouse perspective, once we roll out the reports out, it should be used by at least 40 or 50 people minimum.

How are customer service and technical support?

Generally, the documentation is pretty decent. All the issues that come up are here in the documentation part. We've not really had to go to Microsoft as of now from a support perspective. The documentation and the support that we get over the internet is quite good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward.

The initial setup was quite quick, nothing much to do. Now, we are more developing the use cases. A use case with data generally takes around four or five days a use case because it will start right from identifying the right field, getting the data, transforming it, and finalizing the warehouse structure. That makes a bit of a thing, but it's pretty straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

We are a technical team so we implemented it in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's a pay-as-you-go module. I'm not very sure about cost because our usage currently is very low. But, I feel that if the usage extends beyond a certain threshold, it will start getting expensive.

It depends what the threshold is. I see we're not at that threshold right now, so it's pretty decent right now.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We were looking at certain other projects and products. For example, we were looking at Snowflake that has a data warehouse. But the project wasn't working. That's why we selected Azure. The primary reason is the skills are very easily available for Azure. The second is from our strategy perspective, because we were trying to be a Microsoft shop it fits into our strategy. That's all.

What other advice do I have?

If you're a Microsoft shop, if you want to get there easily, I think Azure is one of the better choices. Otherwise, other tools generally require specialized skills and specialized partners to come and implement it. Once implemented, then it becomes much easier to install.

I can't comment right now. I've not talked to it in that fashion. Whatever was required by us, business users have been satisfied in the Data Factory setup.

On a scale of one to ten, I would give Azure Data Factory an eight.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Microsoft Azure

Hello peers,

I am working as an IT member at a research company with 200 employees (at most).

I am looking at the pros and cons of SCCM and BigFix software.

At the moment, we are using BigFix just for updating and I think if we switch to SCCM that would be a more complicated and costly solution because of my company's infrastructure and requirements.

What is your professional recommendation for me? Is SCCM going to bring unnecessary workload for a small company, such as mine? Also, is it worth choosing SCCM over BigFix based on its features, budget, etc?

Thank you!

Hi peers,

I am trying to understand how the three tools Alteryx, Denodo and Azure Data Factory overlap or complement each other?

We have lots of different data sources with not much data volume but complex data structures from .xls, DB2, SQL Server, OLAP cubes, data via API's and we are looking to find a new way on how to best extract all this data and have our end users report with Power BI out of it.

I assume the underlying best data warehouse would be MS Azure Synapse Analytics. Or is there another data warehouse solution that would make more sense?

Data load volume should not be an issue but the performance of report creation is still a concern.

Thanks,

Stefan

Hi community,

I am working as a Solution Architect at Australian Catholic University.

My responsibility is to recommend solutions for the requirements given by business stakeholders. I do a market scan to find solutions that are available off the shelf. Sometimes, it happens that no COTS solution meets the business requirements and then I go for custom development using a low-code platform. ACU has both Microsoft Power Apps and SNOW (ServiceNow) platforms.

My question is on what criteria we should be deciding between the two platforms to recommend for the custom development - like size of application, integration feasibilities, internal or external users, reporting intensive applications, process flows intensive applications, etc. And for the given criteria, which platform between MS Power Apps and SNOW, is most suitable?

In other words, are there any clear guidelines that can help to decide the appropriate platform (MS Power Apps or SNOW) for developing business applications or enterprise applications?

Thanks,

Naveen

Hi community,

I am a solution architect for a global tech company with over ten years of experience.

What are the benefits of having separate layers or a dedicated schema for each layer in ETL?

One dedicated layer for staging, one for type 1 persistent tables, and a dedicated schema/layer for tables at a dimensional model?

Why it is not recommended to have all tables in one schema?

Thanks!

I appreciate your help.

Hi community members,

Azure DevOps generates a wiki report after executing pipelines for automation testing.

I need to simultaneously push and execute test cases in HP ALM. Each test case should have a unique ID and be dynamically updated as soon as the pipeline is executed.

Has anyone tried to integrate Azure DevOps with HP ALM?

Your tips/guidance will be much appreciated!

Hi,

I am working as a solution architect for a tech vendor with 10,000+ employees.

I need to perform comparative analysis for ETL tools available to populate data from OLTP to OLAP.

The main criteria I am considering are:

  • Price
  • Functionality (transformation, error logging and handling, loading patterns to be supported)
  • Development and maintenance efforts
  • Popularity in the market.

I want to evaluate both Oracle and Open Source options. I am also open to both tools (ODI, Golden Gate, etc) and technology- e.g. Oracle Materialized view.

Thanks! I appreciate your help.

We are a large multi-national corporate financial services provider. Governance and Business Continuity are a key part of our design and implementations.

We operate in 10+ geographies with various degrees of market maturity and capabilities in a "federated model" type.

I would like to understand the key "generic" but universal Governance and Business Continuity requirements that HelpSystems AutoMate, UiPath, Automation Anywhere (AA), Blue Prism, and Microsoft Power Automate would require if implemented in a decentralised manner.

What would be the minimum requirement?
