Virtualization with different operating systems that is easy to setup and has good support

Pros and Cons

  • "What I like is that you can have different storage locations for different applications."
  • "I think that it should be able to integrate with other third-party backup and recovery solutions, more that it does now."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case for this solution is virtualization. Instead of getting additional hardware devices, we can add different compartments of storage in one hardware device.

You don't have to get extra hardware devices, you just need one hardware device with different compartments, so you can save different tasks on different compartments in a secure server. That is the purpose of VMware on our server, and what works for multiple storage systems in a hardware device. That is what this solution is meant to do.

What is most valuable?

What I like is that you can have different storage locations for different applications. This means that we can host different applications in different server locations.

It reduces the cost of having to purchase hardware, rather than multiple hardware devices you only need one single hardware device, then you just have to increase the hard drive and RAM capacity.

That is one of the features that I appreciate the most.

Also, it works alongside Veeam, so when a server goes down, you can replicate what is on that server to another physical server immediately. It's a backup and replication service all on its own.

What needs improvement?

In regards to stability, it doesn't do the patches on the operating systems. The manufacturers need to develop patches for security reasons, on all of the applications.

There could be an improvement in the scalability.

I think that it should be able to integrate with other third-party backup and recovery solutions, more that it does now. I feel that this is an area that needs to be worked on.

The dashboard and user interface is friendly but could be friendlier, so that even a person who is just learning about virtualization would be able to understand the features on the interface.

They should look at things like plugins. Other providers incorporate them into their own products. I feel that the same should be done with VMware to stay competitive in the market.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is quite stable. If there are issues with the physical server then VMware will also have issues. There is no problem with the virtualization itself, rather it can be with the operating system or the hardware. VMware is stable.

Most of the organizations use Microsoft, so it integrates well and easily with Microsoft.

I can't say that there are any vulnerabilities.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable, but based on my own experience, I would say it is only 70% scalable compared to other competitors.

How are customer service and technical support?

One of our customers had an issue with VMware and with their licensing. In trying to apply it, we had some issues.

There was a person who had access to the platform to apply the licensing before, was no longer there, so we couldn't access it. We contacted technical support and they were great.

Every time we opened a case, we had support.

The support system is great and instantaneous. They have a strong followup.

We enjoyed our experience with the technical support system.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward, but you will need a technical person to understand how it works.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have not evaluated other solutions. This is the only virtualization solution that I am using.

What other advice do I have?

We are system integrators so we don't use this solution completely, we use the applications or services fully, we just make sure to go through the features and do our best to use them, and then we sell them.

There may be some aspects that VMware needs to improve on, but we haven't used all of the features so it is difficult to know all that needs to be improved.

We try to understand how it works, and the dynamics of the solution to sell it.

It provides multiple platforms, you can use a Windows Operating System, you can Mac, and you can use Linux on a particular server.

It allows us to do virtualization with different operating system platforms. I like that about this solution.

I have not worked with all of the features, but I can say that this product provides most of the capabilities that customers need.

It's easy to set up.

I would recommend this solution.

If you give a solution a ten out of ten there is nothing to be improved upon. There is always room for improvement as there are always upgrades.

I cannot give a ten when I know there are things to improve.

Technology is evolving and the world is going virtual, so they need to step up their game.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

A log analysis and alerts system that is inexpensive compared to the competition

Pros and Cons

  • "The setup and installation are very easy."
  • "It is very scalable and can handle a large workload."
  • "It needs better integration with third-party analytics tools."
  • "Log retention should have more options for user control."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use is for system log collection and analysis.

What is most valuable?

What I like most about the solution is the interactive log analysis and then that we can use the analysis to send alerts.

What needs improvement?

I think there are a lot of areas where the product could be improved. To start with I would like the capability to do additional customizations, like integrating with third-party products. Every customer that we have is not using Log Insight. For those people who are using Solarwinds or Splunk or any other monitoring tool, there should be an option to forward the logs from Insights to the other products and options for this that we can choose. It would be good to make it so we can start forwarding logs and analysis to other monitoring systems.

It would be good to be able to increase log retention. They improved log retention in the latest version. Before it was only 30 days that you could keep the logs, but in the latest version, they have increased that limit to a number of months. One thing that goes along with the enhanced log retention is we need to have a lot of space to store the logs.

So, integration with other monitoring tools and log retentions are things that should be more under user control. We need to have additional storage, fine. That is okay, we have a lot of storage at our data centers and if necessary we can put in additional disks.

But the license cost is too much. Compared to the storage costs we will have to increase capacity, the license from vRealize will be more costly.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using vRealize Log Insight by VMware for a few years, from 2014 to the present.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I think it is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution. I can say that I agree with the claims that it can be scaled. It is an awesome product. Organizationally it is able to cover our needs completely. Most likely we have nearly 40,000 fixed logs. There are a lot of things that we can do with Log Insight.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used to have HP OpenView monitoring. Then we moved to Centreon monitoring. Then we moved to Splunk. Then later we changed again to using Log Insight.

The reason for changing finally to vRealize was it based on the fact that we got a vRealize site license site. Log Insight is a part of the vRealize Suite. With this product, we did not need to buy an additional license for log monitoring.

How was the initial setup?

The setup and installations are very, very easy and straightforward. There is nothing that takes much effort and in that way it is fine.

The amount of time that it takes to do the installation depends on how big your infrastructure is. If we are going to do a single node, it may take a few minutes. If you are going to do an installation for a cluster using Log Insight, then it might take some additional time, but it based on the number of modes. It total, it may take an average of twelve hours.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Log Insight does not cost much when compared to Splunk. The license cost for Splunk or any other monitoring tool is too high. Compared to Insight that way — just looking at the license — the vRealize solution is kind of a cheap and better than other products cost-wise.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to people looking at Log Insight as a monitoring tool is that it is good and that they can go ahead and go for it because it is a good solution.

On a scale from one to ten (where one is the worst and ten is the best), I would rate the product overall as an eight-of-ten.

Has good dashboards and is simple to install and connect to the environment

Pros and Cons

  • "We use the on-premises version of this solution for log analysis and to find details about certain issues."
  • "Documentation is lacking, including some guide as to how to use the expressions. It is not clear how to look for a log, for example. Some examples in the documentation might be helpful. I think that VMware had good documentation, but it's no longer hosted. The documentation is not as easy to understand as it was before."

What is our primary use case?

We use the on-premises version of this solution for log analysis and to find details about certain issues. My experience, however, is that Log Insight is not user friendly. You have to know a lot to find out how it works.

What needs improvement?

Documentation is lacking, including some guides as to how to use the expressions. It is not clear how to look for a log, for example. Some examples in the documentation might be helpful. I think that VMware had good documentation, but it's no longer hosted. The documentation is not as easy to understand as it was before.

Log Insight has a good dashboard, where you can search for a log. However, it is difficult at the beginning for the administrator to understand it. I asked my colleague how often they use this tool and they said, "It is very difficult to find something in the tool. You need to know what you are looking for." This might be the part that should be improved.

The interactive analyzer feature should also be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using this solution for about two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's very stable. I've never had any critical issue. There might have been some bugs, of course, but nothing critical.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I can't say how scalable Log Insight is because we do not have a big installation, although the solution works well enough for us. I never scaled out with Log Insight.

We have about ten VMware administrators.

How are customer service and technical support?

In general, I am satisfied with their technical support. I contacted technical support many times and everything was resolved. I don't have any bad feelings with technical support. I think it's very good, although it depends on who are you talking with. Some technical engineers have more experience than others, so it depends.

How was the initial setup?

It was very easy to setup. I didn't have any problem with that. Log Insight is simple to install and connect to the environment, but the problem arises when you want to look for some information. This is a large problem because the documentation and examples on the internet don't give us so as much information as we need.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing could always be lower. If it were free, I would be more satisfied.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution an eight of ten.

Good interface and log search functionality but could use better pricing

Pros and Cons

  • "The interface of the solution is good."
  • "The pricing of the solution could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

I primarily use the solution for a basic login switch.

It's a centralized login server for us. When we have some incident or some log that we want to query, instead of querying directly to its server we analyze the logs and create our own specific queries.

What is most valuable?

The log search functionality is very good.

The alerts, based on patterns, is quite useful.

The interface of the solution is good.

The dashboard offers good functionality.

What needs improvement?

The pricing of the solution could be improved.

The vRealize content packs should be able to pass more information from the UNIX log.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have some issues regarding space management. We may need to get fully comfortable with the idea of deleting the old logs. We usually have some issues with space and it requires more intervention.

How are customer service and technical support?

We've been in contact with technical support in the past. They're quite good. We're satisfied with the level of service we've been provided.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We're also using Elastic's X-Pack. There aren't too many differences between the solutions. To me, they are almost the same in terms of offering and functionality. The biggest difference is that Log Insight has some items built-in and Elestci requires you to do a few things yourself.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of the solution, as far as I can recall, was straightforward. There wasn't much complexity involved.

What other advice do I have?

I personally am not actively using the solution for searching for logs or creating log analysis. I'm just using it for a few needs here and there when we have some requirements.

It depends on a company's use cases, but I would advise that if they've got the infrastructure and it is all based on VMware, they should use Log Insight despite the price. I personally have more preference for the open-source tools but because of the price, also. However, Log Insight is quite good and very useful.

I'd rate the solution seven out of ten. It's a good product, but it has room for improvement and could improve upon the pricing.

Very stable and scalable with good server virtualization

Pros and Cons

  • "The most valuable feature is server virtualization. It's been very useful."
  • "The solution isn't user-friendly for admins."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for the server virtualization for hosting services, and for some VDI solutions.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is server virtualization. It's been very useful.

What needs improvement?

The implementation process could be improved. We ran into a few issues during the initial setup that could have been avoided if it was more straightforward.

The solution isn't user-friendly for admins.

The solution needs to offer a feature for small companies that would allow us to run VDI that won't take up server resources.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for eight or nine years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is very good. We've been using it for eight or nine years and haven't had any issues with it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is very good.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is good, but because of the sanctions, we don't deal directly with the company; rather we get assistance through consultants.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was okay, but it wasn't exactly straightforward. For the implementation, there was a problem with the VDI solution. For example, with the Horizon 7 version, we had some problems setting it up. We had to do some studying up on the solution and did a lot of Googling to find the answers we needed. We were able to resolve it in the end.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of the solution is okay, however we use a nulled version. We have issues because of the sanctions on our country. For important projects, we get licensing through Dubai. Right now we are using a nulled version of the solution.

What other advice do I have?

We use the private cloud deployment model.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. I'd rate it higher, but the implementation is very hard.

I would recommend the solution to others. They will save money is they use it. It's also good for maintaining the hardware.

Easy to set up and good pricing with a good root cause analysis feature

Pros and Cons

  • "The root cause analysis feature is very valuable."
  • "I don't use the solution on a day to day basis, so I'm not sure what specifically can be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for complete log monitoring and management.

How has it helped my organization?

We're able to use the solution to analyze all of our logs, for years to come.

What is most valuable?

The root cause analysis feature is very valuable.

What needs improvement?

I don't use the solution on a day to day basis, so I'm not sure what specifically can be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for three years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have quite a few licenses, so for us, it isn't too hard to scale. Right now, we only have 15 users on the solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

Personally, I don't log calls with technical support. We do, however, have an interior team that can assist with troubleshooting.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We didn't previously use a different solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was easy.

What about the implementation team?

We have our own interior team that handles the product.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of the solution is reasonable.

What other advice do I have?

We use the on-premises deployment model. We're also platinum partners.

In terms of advice to others, if they're looking for a basic VMware solution, it's okay. We've tried other options. Log Insight seems to be better than other solutions in terms of very good integrations and working out items to be able to log.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. All of our must-haves are available in this product.

Supports data center virtualization, network, and security

Pros and Cons

  • "The virtualization solution supports data center virtualization, network and security."
  • "It's great for VMware, but it would be good if they had third-party logins."

What is our primary use case?

We are a partner with VRealize Log Insight. I'm a senior consultant in the company but also have a position as an architect. We use the product for collection and management of data.

What is most valuable?

The virtualization solution supports data center virtualization, network, and security.

What needs improvement?

I don't think there's any specific improvement I'd like to see, perhaps third-party logins.
It's great for VMware, but it would be good if they had third-party logins. I'm pretty happy with the dashboard interface and management monitoring tools.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a very stable solution, I rate it highly.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product is scalable.

How are customer service and technical support?

I'm very satisfied with the technical support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward. It's difficult to measure deployment time, it really depends on what you're doing. If it's a single VM deployment it shouldn't take more than an hour.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The setup costs can sometimes be a bit expensive but I think for the technology they are offering it's top of the mark. There are no additional costs aside from the standard licensing fees. There's really no competition for what they're offering. They have the production, the market, the scales you require to work on VMware, the price they are asking is justified.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this product an eight out of 10.

Provides data to assist us with optimizing our infrastructure

Pros and Cons

  • "Our current costs are too high, and this tool will help us to better optimize our infrastructure."
  • "The dashboard needs to be improved because this is what I need to monitor my infrastructure."

What is our primary use case?

In our data center, we have too many physical servers and too many hosts. We are not properly optimized. We are implementing this solution and other virtualization to provide us with the best way to place different workloads with the goal of optimizing the environment.

We are using this solution in our data center.

What is most valuable?

Our current costs are too high, and this tool will help us to better optimize our infrastructure.

What needs improvement?

The dashboard needs to be improved because this is what I need to monitor my infrastructure.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been testing this solution for two months and we plan to fully deploy it next year.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have not contacted technical support specifically for this solution because we are still just testing. However, we have been using VMware for 15 years and the technical support has always been perfect.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are currently in an evaluation stage where were are choosing between VMware and Turbonomic.

For the past 15 years, we have been using VMware for virtualization with ESX, vSphere, and vCenter. We are satisfied with VMware, and we already have this infrastructure in place, so we think that this VRealize Log Insight will be the better choice between products.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
