Good virtualization and optimization in an easy to use solution
Pros and Cons
  • "Good virtualization and ability to optimize and deliver an automated and orchestrated cloud platform on-prem."
  • "Higher cost than other similar solutions."

What is our primary use case?

We deliver this solution to our customers and we partner with the vendor. I'm a senior infrastructure solution specialist.

What is most valuable?

This is a straightforward solution, there's not much troubleshooting required and the work around it is quite simple. I particularly like the virtualization and the ability of the solution to optimize and deliver an automated and orchestrated cloud platform on-prem. They regularly surprise us with great features developed by a very, very sharp R&D team that delivers up-to-date technology with more features and more valuable ideas to enhance and automate the platform with data center.

What needs improvement?

If you're converting from any other virtualization system to VMware, you will note that the price is significantly higher.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for 10 years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable to an unlimited number of hosts.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is very helpful. They don't deliver the troubleshooting directly, but they understand and collect the logs and provide the procedure to follow in order to reach a solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. VMware is a very, very easy system to implement and to administer, as long as you have at least some sort of experience. You don't need to be an expert but those who have a high-level knowledge of VMware can manage and deliver the crucial tasks.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are different licensing costs depending on whether you're using the standard or enterprise solution. A socket in the standard solution might cost $1,000 whereas it would cost $4,000 for the enterprise socket.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution a nine out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

How are customer service and technical support?

I have not personally been in touch with VMware support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have not used another similar solution.

How was the initial setup?

The implementation is an easy process for us, which is why we're using VMware cloud as a product. The length of time required for deployment depends on the customer. We need to know their requirements, and then we proposed timelines and inform them accordingly. It is defined by the number of nodes and the number of workloads.

What about the implementation team?

We deploy vSphere for our customers. We also offer maintenance and support as part of a managed service.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This is quite an expensive product, although everything is included in the standard licensing fee.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, for me, everything with this product looks good and I can recommend it.

I would rate this solution a ten out of ten.

We also have another solution for disaster recovery.

We used Microsoft Azure for testing with the model phone credit. It was for testing only.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In my opinion, the price is not cheap, nor it is expensive. It's average.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

A resilient solution that is easy to scale
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are the resilience of the solution and vMotion."
  • "Support for the product is not good enough."

What is our primary use case?

We are using vSphere to virtualize our workloads.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the resilience of the solution and vMotion.

What needs improvement?

I would like to have replication between sites available in the standard version.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using vSphere for more than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We use it on a daily basis and it seems stable most of the time.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

All of our servers and products run using vSphere. It is easy to scale.

How are customer service and technical support?

Support for the product is not good enough. It should be faster and more efficient.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

This is the only solution of this type that we have used.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was simple, but you have to develop it before you begin to install it.

The deployment took us approximately one week.

What about the implementation team?

We shared the implementation with a partner.

We do the maintenance, although we did have a problem one time that we escalated to the vendor.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of this solution is mid-range. There are additional features that can be purchased for an extra charge. For example, if you want replication between sites then you have to pay more.

What other advice do I have?

In summary, this is a good product and I recommend it because it's resilient and you do not have many products to install.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

It is a scalable solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is not that great, and it's not that accessible.

What is most valuable?

The solution is user-friendly and easy to manage.

What needs improvement?

The solution could improve by providing better information on what other products it is compatible with. For example, we have customers that do not like AMD Chipsets used with VMware but it is not a technical issue, they need to bring more awareness.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using VMware vSphere for approximately 10 years.

Robust and easy to use with good performance and efficiency
Pros and Cons
  • "The performance is efficient."
  • "One of the areas creating a crash is when you are cloning."

What is our primary use case?

We have Hyper-V on a physical machine and another virtual machine. We are using this because of iSCSI, and we are using VMware for performance and production.

What is most valuable?

The performance is efficient. You can log the performance and report on the bottlenecks or any other problems you encounter.

What needs improvement?

One of the areas creating a crash is when you are cloning.

If you are cloning a virtual machine and you have any license on another system it will crash and we have to contact third-party support for assistance.

It's not cloning 100%.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using VMware vSphere for eight years.

We are using version 5 and 6.7.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a stable solution, we have not had any issues with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's a scalable solution. We have three people in our organization who are using this solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

We did not contact technical support. It wasn't necessary.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are working with Hyper-V. It was so poor that we started using VMware.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward, it was easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price could be lower.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are looking for other solutions, specifically for Hyper-V and domain controllers.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution. It's robust, it's working and it's easy to use.

I would rate VMware vSphere a ten out of ten.
