Plenty of features, reasonably priced, and high level quality
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are the orchestration layer, plug and play capabilities, and also the fact that you can either configure it as a full mesh or hard install."
  • "There are a number of customers we have that require a fully mashed SD-WAN on VeloCloud that is not available currently."

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the orchestration layer, plug and play capabilities, and also the fact that you can either configure it as a full mesh or hard install. Even though fully meshed is limited, it is still a good feature.

What needs improvement?

There are a number of customers we have that require a fully mashed SD-WAN on VeloCloud that is not available currently. If you compare the reporting tool to all other tools that you use for customers for MPLS, they are not as granular. Additionally, the security could be better and increasing the capabilities for fully meshed architectural typology would be beneficial.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for approximately two years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This solution is scalable, most of our clients are enterprise size companies.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is there if we need them. We are a premium partner to VMware, if there are issues that you cannot resolve internally, we reach out to them and they give us the help we need.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We currently use a few solutions other than this one such as Meraki. When picking the best solution for our clients, the best depends on the use case. It depends on the customer requirements, what they are looking for and then we will recommend the best fit based on our offering.

How was the initial setup?

The installation is easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is reasonable for this solution, but the only challenge for us is that the Rand currency fluctuates to the dollar and provides some complexities. The price might go up just because the Rand has actually lost value.

What other advice do I have?

This solution is at a very high level, and quite good. However, it is not one platform that fits all, it depends on the use case and what the customer looking for. You might find customers that want security or other UTM based features, which VeloCloud does not offer. It weighs heavily on the customer requirements, but if security is what they are after then I would not generally recommend the VeloCloud offering.

I rate VMware SD-WAN an eight out of ten.

Has many functionalities and good scalability
Pros and Cons
  • "There are 400 functionalities of the system."
  • "There should be more automation and self-service features."

What is our primary use case?

Our only use cases are large multinational enterprise customers, as well as very large service providers. The solutions get deployed to the public cloud or to the private cloud depending on the user's requirements.

What is most valuable?

There are 400 functionalities of the system. Depending on the user's requirements, we may find one feature more important than the other.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes the room for improvement is designing it for a different customer base that they're not currently in. We match the right solution to the right user's requirements. Some users need a multitenant offering, whereas most large enterprises don't need that. But if you are talking to a service provider, some don't offer a multitenant solution. And so when the customer needs that, we would say use one with a multitenant, like VMware.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for about two or three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The ones we work with are all very good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of the solution is very good. We have plans to increase usage.

Some clients want to go very slowly and test out just one country first. If you're going into a lot of countries, you sometimes have regulatory problems with devices being imported and finding the right people to handle that.

How are customer service and support?

I can't really comment because I haven't used it that much.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is always pretty complex with what we're involved in.

The deployment time really depends on how conservative a customer is and how quickly they want it to go. Some of them are three months and some are a year.

What about the implementation team?

The amount of staff we need for the deployment depends on whether you're deploying to 50 sites or 2,500 sites.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten. In order for it to be a ten out of ten, there should be more automation and self-service features.

Has an optimization feature that ensures the quality of the services running on the overlay
Pros and Cons
  • "Has an optimization feature that acts to ensure the quality of the services running on the overlay to be most valuable."
  • "The firewall can be more advanced."

What is most valuable?

I have found the optimization feature that acts to ensure the quality of the services running on the overlay to be most valuable.

VMware SD-WAN is a more complete product because of the SD-WAN feature.

What needs improvement?

The firewall can be more advanced.

The 4G connection doesn't come by default, and it would be good to have that in the next release.

The flexibility of use for customers could be improved as well. It would be good to also improve the reseller transfer of the box from one customer to another customer.

The cost could be lower too.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using VMware SD-WAN for about 2 to 3 years.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is okay for Singapore. VMware has had quite good results this year.

How was the initial setup?

To register with the orchestrator takes some effort sometimes. Our engineer did try a few times, and it's not exactly zero-touch. You still need to have all the information.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The cost of VMware SD-WAN is high, but I think you can still get better pricing if your volume is high.

What other advice do I have?

If you are purely looking at it from a connectivity point of view and not so much from the point of security, then you can go for VMware. However, if you also want security features and you have a tight budget, then you probably need to choose Fortinet because Fortinet itself is a firewall. For VMware, you have to either get the NFV model that supports a third party firewall (it's a virtual appliance) or subscribe to additional services from cloud-based firewall vendors. So, you will have additional costs.

Although Fortinet is lower cost-wise than VMware, in terms of the SD-WAN feature, I think VMware is more complete. Fortinet is still lagging on the orchestrator function. So, I would rate VMware SD-WAN at eight on a scale from one to ten.

Good performance and allows our customers to better manage their environment
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature for one of our customers is the ability to stage cloud workloads from the local network."
  • "Technical support is in need of improvement."

What is our primary use case?

We are a reseller and this is one of the solutions that we provide to our customers.

The use case is dependent on the customer and their requirements, but the primary use is as an SD-WAN. It helps our customers streamline their configuration, it improves link recovery, and helps them better manage their environment.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature for one of our customers is the ability to stage cloud workloads from the local network.

What needs improvement?

This solution needs a local gateway for the cloud in every country. The gateway is used to set up cloud access and one of my clients had a bad experience with the local partner that was trying to set one up.

Technical support is in need of improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using VeloCloud for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

With respect to stability, every vendor deploys this solution in their own way. There is always a concern about performance and stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is difficult to judge scalability with a small number of deployments. I would need to try it with 100 branches to test scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support for VeloCloud needs to be improved. Customers compensate for the lack of support by using the portal. I would rate the support a seven out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy, which is a plus for this solution.

The majority of time is spent in the planning stage. Once you are ready to deploy, it should not take more than 30 minutes.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

VeloCloud performs as well as the Cisco SD-WAN but it is cheaper in price.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend using this solution. It is a good product and if the support were improved then it would be even better.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Simplifies automation and virtual services insertion
Pros and Cons
  • "VeloCloud developed DMPO to increase performance and connectivity."
  • "VeloCloud could improve its integration capabilities with other solutions."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for connecting multiple sites through the internet.

Typically, our clients are medium-sized businesses.

What is most valuable?

VeloCloud developed DMPO to increase performance and connectivity.

VeloCloud provides very good performance, support, portal configuration, and service integration — I think that it's perfect.

What needs improvement?

VeloCloud could improve its integration capabilities with other solutions. VeloCloud just provides connectivity, but what about advanced security services or administration service providers, and HPP for voice solutions? I think that VeloCloud could improve this kind of service integration. I know it's not their main use case, but it's part of their portfolio.

In the next release, I would like to see better support for IPv6.

I also think that a CPE that supports WiFi 6 is necessary.

For how long have I used the solution?

I am a reseller — I have been using this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is good, but it could be better.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability-wise, I think it's pretty good. It can support various numbers of CPEs and VMs for different uses in order to grow the capacity of the platform.

How are customer service and technical support?

Our customers don't have any complaints surrounding technical support. They don't often need help as there is plenty of reliable documentation online surrounding VeloCloud. We have yet to come across a use case that VeloCloud doesn't have documentation for.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very simple. You can auto-connect the CPEs. Once you activate the CPEs, the CPEs can then connect to other CPEs that are in the network.

What other advice do I have?

For reliable connectivity, I would definitely recommend VeloCloud; however, if my customers want another kind of service in addition to connectivity, then I would recommend another kind of solution.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give this solution a rating of nine.

Offers dynamic multipath optimization and it is easy to set up with zero-touch provisioning
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is the dynamic multipath optimization."
  • "There is no security included, which is something that should be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We use VeloCloud as our SD-WAN solution.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the dynamic multipath optimization. This is something that other competing products do not have.

Zero-touch provisioning makes it very easy to set up.

The single path optimization features are useful.

What needs improvement?

There is no security included, which is something that should be improved. For example, they should at least include basic firewall capabilities.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using VeloCloud for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of VeloCloud is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability-wise, this is a good solution. We have a large company but our group makes up just a small part of the network, with perhaps 50 users. This includes regular business owners and home users.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to VeloCloud, we used Fortinet. However, the SD-WAN is not as good, which is why we switched over.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is really easy.

Once you connect the appliance to the internet, you manage the policies and that enables SD-WAN.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is very comparable to Fortinet.

What other advice do I have?

This is a product that I like. For anybody looking for an SD-WAN, this is a really good option, and probably one of the best. My only real complaint is about the lack of security. If security is their primary goal, then I would suggest implementing Fortinet instead. On the other hand, if SD-WAN is the primary concern then choose VeloCloud.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Straightforward, good manageability, built in scalability, and has reachable support
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of this solution is manageability."
  • "Reporting is an area that can be improved, as there are some features that are lacking with the reporting aspect."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case of this solution is manageability. Everything is controlled from a central aspect of the orchestrator.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of this solution is manageability.

It is easy to plug in new sites and provision new sites.

It's very straightforward. It's difficult to find fault with this solution.

What needs improvement?

Reporting is an area that can be improved, as there are some features that are lacking with the reporting aspect.

I would like to see a reporting site and for the monitoring, they can implement it, or interface it with an existing monitoring system, which is not easy.

For how long have I used the solution?

We started using VMware SD-WAN one year ago.

We are using version 4.1

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We do not have any complaints regarding the stability of this solution. there are no outages or any malfunctioning.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's very scalable, it's built into the platform.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have no issues with technical support. We have no complaints. They are easily reachable. It doesn't take long to obtain technical assistance.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also use Harmony Connect, and one other competitor, Fortinet.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My understanding is that the pricing is in the same range as other solutions.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We have looked at some competitors.

What other advice do I have?

SD-WAN is a perfect fit as a solution for several branch sites.

I would rate VMware SD-WAN a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

User-friendly and is easier to integrate than other solutions
Pros and Cons
  • "I would absolutely recommend VeloCloud because it's user-friendly and because the integration is easier than with other solutions."
  • "I would like for them to upgrade to 5G integration. Our customers have 4G now and the connectivity isn't good. It should be much faster."

What is our primary use case?

I use VeloCloud for software for reports SD-WAN solutions and WAN connectivity.

    What needs improvement?

They should help our customers reduce the cost of the implementation from a local user cloud to the user using a standard cloud. They should improve the time and the cost of the implementation.

I would like for them to upgrade to 5G integration. Our customers have 4G now and the connectivity isn't good. It should be much faster.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using VeloCloud for ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability depends on the network connectivity. If the Internet connection isn't stale, it will affect it.

How are customer service and technical support?

We contact our partners to get local support.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very simple. It's user-friendly. It only takes a few hours, not days, to deploy for somebody who is experienced. We use it on a daily basis.

    What about the implementation team?

We used a system integrator for the deployment. From the second year onwards, the maintenance is done by our local partners.

There are up to 100 users.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's not cheap but it's affordable.

What other advice do I have?

I would absolutely recommend VeloCloud because it's user-friendly and because the integration is easier than with other solutions.

I would rate VeloCloud a nine out of ten.
