Great product at what it does but it's lacking advanced malware detection capabilities
Pros and Cons
  • "Some of the features that were important were a built-in firewall and device control."
  • "They lack the visibility you get in a heuristical, artificial, AI type of product, like a next-gen antivirus."

What is most valuable?

Some of the features that were important were a built-in firewall and device control.

What needs improvement?

They lack the visibility you get in a heuristical, artificial, AI type of product, like a next-gen antivirus. They lack the visibility of what's happening that your next-gen solutions offer.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Symantec for a year. My company has had it for a while, but I don't know exactly how long.

How are customer service and technical support?

My staff has used support but I personally have not.

What other advice do I have?

I don't think there's really any issues rolling it out, it's more in the reporting. The one time we had an issue was with knowing a true endpoint count and the reporting. There was a conflict with what was in the console, I think it was a glitch.

In the next release, I would like to see any of the features that the next generation antivirus and GAV products have, like the heuristical, the behavioral analysis. Because it will set the behavior of the endpoint and that's how it identifies something that is not normal to your pattern of working.

I will give it a seven out of ten because it's a great product at what it does, but it's lacking the advanced malware detection capabilities.

Has good anti-virus and firewall policies but their support has been lacking
Pros and Cons
  • "The anti-virus and firewall policies are the most valuable features of this solution."

What is our primary use case?

We just use it mainly for workstation protection.

    What is most valuable?

The anti-virus and firewall policies are the most valuable features of this solution.

    What needs improvement?

I think it's a good product but we've had some problems with their support and service. From the beginning of this year, I haven't been able to reach their support.

Last year, the support wasn't bad but this year I wanted to renew their license, but I can't reach anybody from their company.

We don't have any plans to replace them but we haven't been able to renew a license.

Sometimes there is a conflict with Windows 10 updates. There is a Windows server or Windows workstation startup after installing the new Windows update. We contacted Microsoft and they said the device caused an issue.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Symantec for eight years.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We were using some traditional licensing. Our company is a nonprofit, so we have a different price pricing model.

What other advice do I have?

The most important thing is the cloud management. I would like to see behavior analysis. These two things will be most valuable to the user.

I would rate it a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Has live updates but needs to support the EDR function
    Pros and Cons
    • "The application and device control are valuable features, and the live update is another one. We have a schedule to check every four hours for the live update."
    • "Symantec End-point production doesn't support the EDR function."

    What is most valuable?

The application and device control are valuable features, and the live update is another one. We have a schedule to check every four hours for the live update.

    The initial setup is straightforward.

    What needs improvement?

Symantec End-point production doesn't support the EDR function.

There are certain drawbacks regarding deployment. We have to leverage other things like PPM.
Another major drawback is that we can't do the deployment from the console itself. We have to depend on other products technically.

The reporting is not as good.

Check detection could be improved as well.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using it for three years.

How are customer service and technical support?

The support from Broadcom has been good.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. I think it's automatically configured, so we didn't have to do anything.

What other advice do I have?

If you only want the Endpoint Protection solution, you can go with Symantec End-User Endpoint Security. It is an awesome solution.

However, in the case of a large user base, and you also have to take care of the deployment etc., then I would not recommend this solution.

I would rate Symantec End-User Endpoint Security at six on a scale from one to ten.

Outdated, ancient, and lacks features that current solutions have
    Pros and Cons
    • "It's good at detecting signature-based stuff and stopping that."
    • "It needs to die. In my opinion, Symantec was a really great security company, 10, 15 years ago. They went out, they bought all the great tools and then they never did anything with them. So they've just fallen behind and there's nothing that's going to work now to bring them back up the date that's going to regain user confidence."

    What is most valuable?

It's good at detecting signature-based stuff and stopping that, but what Symantec misses, CrowdStrike would pick up. I'm hoping to move CrowdStrike 100% to get rid of Symantec.

    What needs improvement?

It needs to die. In my opinion, Symantec was a really great security company, 10, 15 years ago. They went out, they bought all the great tools and then they never did anything with them. So they've just fallen behind and there's nothing that's going to work now to bring them back up the date that's going to regain user confidence.

In order to improve, I would like to see active remediation tools, where I can connect to systems and do things directly on the system without having to leave the tool.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for five years.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate it a two out of ten because I think it is outdated, ancient, lacking the features that the current solutions have. And unfortunately, I think it's being passed around so much that Symantec's now Broadcom, that nobody's given it any of the attention or the love that it needs to keep it a viable solution. Ultimately, I think it's going to die.
