My storage team likes the replication features, and three-site replication is a unique feature
Pros and Cons
  • "My storage team likes Unity's replication features. Three-site replication is a unique feature that EMC offers us."
  • "I think Dell EMC should be more careful in appointing partners, and they need to have better control over their partners. And if their partner has some problems with them, we should not suffer."

What is our primary use case?

Unity is our central storage solution. All of our data is stored on this platform, so it's not just production servers in DR. We have two DR—near and far—so there are three sites in total. Unity holds all of our transactional data.

What is most valuable?

My storage team likes Unity's replication features. Three-site replication is a unique feature that EMC offers us.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using Unity storage for almost 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Unity is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Unity is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate Dell EMC support seven out of 10. We had to follow up a lot. We sent an email beforehand, so they knew the model and everything about our environment. We expected them to do better homework and engage with my team. If they had done the implementation like that we could have saved a lot of time. That is why I rate them seven and not nine or eight.

How was the initial setup?

Implementing Unity isn't straightforward, but it's not that complex, either. There is still some room to expedite the implementation process a bit. We had support from EMC guys in India or Singapore. They worked with our bank's in-house storage team, which has about four members.

Our contract included training, and we had to pay for that also. It was supposed to be on site, where our team visited EMC somewhere in India or Singapore to get training, but we couldn't do that because of the pandemic, so the training was online. If we get trained next time, we would like to do most of the implementation by ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have a perpetual license for Unity and a support contract with Dell EMC.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Dell EMC Unity XT eight out of 10. We compared Unity with NetApp and HP also. In some areas, NetApp and HP have advantages over EMC. I think NetApp holds the top Gartner position. It's in the upper-right quadrant.

Also, Dell EMC doesn't have a presence in Bangladesh, so they work through local partners. Previously, they had only one partner with sub-partners or sub-agents. This complicated the relationship with the end customer. We had been working with the same partner for the last eight years, but when we were upgrading, they told us they could no longer support us because they had some issues with EMC. We got caught in the feud between Dell EMC and their partner.

We had to get somebody else appointed as a new partner and then discontinue the earlier partner's agreement to make it commercially feasible. I think EMC should be more careful in appointing partners, and they need to have better control over their partners. And if their partner has some problems with them, we should not suffer.

Easy to install and set up, managed using a single console, and good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The setup and installation procedures are easy."
  • "The reporting should be better. In other systems, you can create many different kinds of reports but this is not the case with Dell."

What is our primary use case?

I work as an integrator and this is one of the products that I have implemented in different locations. Most customers choose this product because they want to have faster storage. The XT series is all-flash, so it's fast.

I recommend it for ERP systems and for people running Oracle Database. I have implemented both of these. Most applications these days are implemented in a VM environment with a Hypervisor, and this product is well suited for virtualization.

What is most valuable?

The setup and installation procedures are easy.

The management is done using a single console, which is good. You don't have to use a separate VM to manage the storage.

The most valuable feature of Dell storage systems is the tiering. However, with an all-flash system, there is no tiering.

What needs improvement?

The monitoring capabilities should be improved.

The reporting should be better. In other systems, you can create many different kinds of reports but this is not the case with Dell.

Dell Unity is going out of support soon, which is bad. They should continue to support it, rather than have it end after five years.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with the Dell EMC Unity XT series for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Unity had a lot of trouble with stability in the beginning, but it is stable now.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable product. I have set up the device in a lot of different locations.

How are customer service and support?

The Unity technical support is very good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have also implemented Dell EMC PowerStore and Unity is better. The PowerStore had a lot of issues when I deployed it.

I also work with HPE 3PAR and I find that it has better monitoring capabilities, a better GUI, and better reporting. Reports with different views can be exported. In Dell products, the reporting is not as good

With 3PAR, there is another appliance required to operate the storage but with Dell, it's good because you can manage it from the same console. You don't need another VM to manage the storage.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy to do and there are no prerequisites.

Installing the license is easy. You just have to download it from the portal.

Upgrading the product is also easy to do.

What other advice do I have?

This is a great storage solution and a product that I recommend. That said, it's not perfect. More can be done from Dell to improve the Unity series.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Good integration, an easy initial setup, and quite stable
Pros and Cons
  • "Integration is easy with this product."
  • "Currently, the protocol SNMP is not implemented. That's a problem, as we follow this protocol and I can't check the integrity of this equipment."

What is our primary use case?

I primarily use the solution for NAS network storage for the Microsoft environment.

What is most valuable?

Overall, I've had a very good experience with the solution so far.

Integration is easy with this product.

What needs improvement?

Currently, the protocol SNMP is not implemented. That's a problem, as we follow this protocol and I can't check the integrity of this equipment.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for two months at this point.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We haven't used the solution for very long, so it may be hard to gauge the stability. However, so far, we haven't had any issues whatsoever. It doesn't crash or freeze. It doesn't have bugs or glitches. It seems quite stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Having only used it a short time, we haven't tried to scale it just yet. We don't foresee any limitations, however, without actually doing it, we can't really tell.

How are customer service and technical support?

We needed to contact technical support in regards to an IAS error in automatic services. We didn't have any issues reaching them or getting the help we needed. So far, we've been satisfied with their level of service. They seem knowledgable and responsive.

How was the initial setup?

We found the implementation to be very straightforward. It's not complex in any way.

The deployment didn't take too long. We had everything up and running in two days or so. It's pretty quick.

We have 12 technicians for the maintenance of all of our equipment in the enterprise. They would also handle any maintenance required for this product.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is quite good. We find it fair. It's not too expensive.

What other advice do I have?

We're just a Dell client. We don't have a business relationship with the company.

I have four Unity products. Two were already installed in September, and one just last week. While two are already in production, the other two are not up and running yet.

I'd recommend the product to others.

Overall, I'd rate it nine out of ten. We haven't worked with it too long, however, everything seems to be going quite well.

High availability, stable, and good support
Pros and Cons
  • "The high availability of Dell EMC Unity XT has been the most important feature."
  • "The interface and configuration could improve."

What is our primary use case?

We use Dell EMC Unity XT as a storage solution for a virtual machine datastore.

How has it helped my organization?

Dell EMC Unity XThas helped our organization with the high availability. It has been working very well and the performance has been good with an old flash solution that we are using. It has improved the reliability and speed of virtual machines.

What is most valuable?

The high availability of Dell EMC Unity XT has been the most important feature.

What needs improvement?

The interface and configuration could improve.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell EMC Unity XT for approximately six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution does not fully scale because it's a scale-up solution, not a scale-out, but if you get the right target, you will be able to scale up to meet your needs. We are not planning to expand the storage of the solution at this time.

We have approximately 200 users using this solution.

How are customer service and support?

The first level support from Dell I was not happy with because as a technician I needed to get the second or third level support. However, the level one support was able to pass me over to the right technician and I received the solution pretty fast. The support overall was very good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously were using the Dell EMC VNX storage and before it, we used CX storage. It's is basically the same solution evolving during the time.

How was the initial setup?

The implementation is straightforward, the configuration tool two hours, and to deploy it took approximately three days. We did some configuration changes and considerations which took a lot of time to test.

The interface and how the configuration needs to be completed could be simplified.

What about the implementation team?

I did the implementation of this solution. The solution works well and does not need any maintenance or assistance unless it is broken.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to others is for them to make a good plan and to use that resource they have.

I rate Dell EMC Unity XT an eight out of ten.

Stability and scalability have completely satisfied our requirements

What is our primary use case?

We use it for a virtualization environment based on VMware vSphere.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features include Snapshots Thin Clones Deduplication and compression.

What needs improvement?

It could be improved in the area of management flexibility. For example, I really need to set read-only access for LUNs, and there's no such option with Unity XT. I would also like to see more support for object storage for S3. NetApp includes basic support for S3 to the on-top array, so it would be great if DELL EMC would include S3 for the Unity XT.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell EMC Unity XT for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability has completely satisfied us.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability has also satisfied us. We use it extensively. We purchased an expansion last year and added about 150 terabytes and we're going to purchase another expansion next year. We plan to use it until the end of support.

The services on the Unity storage are used worldwide in our organization. We have about 1,500 employees.

How are customer service and support?

Dell EMC's technical support is perfect.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was completely straightforward. Anyone who can handle "next, next, next, finish" can deploy Unity. It was deployed within half an hour.

We installed it, connected it to fabric, updated the software, went through the initial configuration dialogue, and that was it. Most of the time in getting it up and running was spent on the data migration.

For deployment and maintenance it requires just one person. In our organization that person is our storage and virtual infrastructure administrator.

What about the implementation team?

We did it ourselves.

What other advice do I have?

It's a great product if it fits your specific needs.

Stable and problem free solution
Pros and Cons
  • "I have had no problem at all. I think this is one of the most important things. It is very good. Maintaining it and deploying updates require very low maintenance. We haven't had problems. We had to replace a couple of disks in all these years, but it was pretty straightforward."
  • "In terms of what could be improved, I would say the deduplication part, because for large deduplications, you need an extra appliance to do it in order to avoid having problems in performance. I think that could be improved, because everything should be included in the product, not with an appliance from the outside."

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature that Unity had at that moment was the ability to communicate with the previous family, the Clariion. So, the migration and all the data transfer was really easy.

What needs improvement?

In terms of what could be improved, I would say the deduplication part, because for large deduplications, you need an extra appliance to do it in order to avoid having problems in performance. I think that could be improved, because everything should be included in the product, not with an appliance from the outside.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been dealing with Dell EMC Unity XT for something like 20 years.

The oldest implementation I have done for Unity was about six, seven years ago and it's been working pretty good. No problem so far.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have had no problem at all. I think this is one of the most important things. It is very good. Maintaining it and deploying updates require very low maintenance. We haven't had problems. We had to replace a couple of disks in all these years, but it was pretty straightforward.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We switched to Unity because of the price, but that was for the migration from IBM to Dell Clariion. And when replacing the Clariion to the Unity, it was an easy migration of the data.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was simple. The main problem is that you need an extra appliance outside of the disk - you need extra hardware.

What other advice do I have?

My advice would be the same thing as the Data Domain - it is important that there is good sizing at the beginning. It makes a difference.

On a scale of one to ten, I would give Dell EMC Unity XT a 10.

Customers like the availability guarantee
Pros and Cons
  • "On the Data Domain side, the most attractive feature is the compression ratio, which none of the other products in the market are currently able to provide. On the Unity side, what customers mostly like is the availability guarantee."

What is our primary use case?

I have a few customers who are using Dell EMC products for storage, backup, and other different purposes.

    What is most valuable?

On the Data Domain side, the most attractive feature is the compression ratio, which none of the other products in the market are currently able to provide. On the Unity side, what customers mostly like is the availability guarantee.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Dell EMC Unity XT for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    This product has been stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    Dell EMC Unity is scalable.

    What was our ROI?

This product does bring a ROI. As I have seen, it helps them to protect their investment since it is future-proof and scalable, so they don't have to change products every year or so. Because of those things, I have seen customers using the EMC product for more than three years.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

When I see other products—like HP, Huawei, and Lenovo—from competitors, I have seen a lot of disadvantages with EMC, price-wise. Huawei and Lenovo are very price competitive.

Looking at the price point for a country like Sri Lanka, where we have a very low economy, I think you need to look at a pricing mechanism that is a bit more flexible.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Dell EMC Unity an eight out of ten because, economically, there are a few things that Dell needs to improve.
