Comparison Summary
Question: What are the biggest differences between Fortinet Fortigate and VMware SD-WAN?
Answer: I am not very familiar with Fortinet and I do not doubt that it is a good platform, however my experience with VMware SD-Wan has been excellent at a time like this when we are going through Covid-19 where through a VDI combination with SD- WAN provides a convenience in organizations to strengthen the capacities for a mobile and remote connection with high levels of flexibility, speed, performance, simplicity, scalability and above all security.

"Proactively detects where problems might arise.""They make use of a combination of different internet lines, which improves quality.""The biggest feature is called D.M.P.O., or Dynamic Multipath Optimization, which is one of the technologies that they use to deliver or ensure data integrity.""This solution is as stable as most firewalls. VMware is a reputable vendor.""VeloCloud developed DMPO to increase performance and connectivity.""The most valuable feature is the Dynamic Multipath Optimization (DMPO), which allows the customer to maintain and monitor their link quality in real-time.""The most valuable feature of this solution is manageability.""It is fairly similar to other solutions. Cons
"Some of the software stability could improve.""To the best of my knowledge, Fortinet does not have a CASB solution and Fortinet does not have a Zero trust solution.""Fortinet currently has many products bundled with FortiGate including the basic firewall and load balancer, and I think that that they need to have separate product portfolios for each of these specialized services.""Sometimes you do need to know some CLI commands, so it's a bit harder for technicians or new people that don't know it.""It is stable, but its stability can be improved.""Its filtering is sometimes too precise or strict. We sometimes have to bypass and authorize some of the sites, but they get blocked. We know that they are trusted sites, but they are blocked, and we don't know why.""The feedback that I have received is that the performance could be better, and the user experience is not as good compared to a previous solution we used. It could be more user-friendly. Of course, it still works fine for our operations.""Monitoring and reporting could be better."

"Some of the service providers that use VeloCloud as their SD-WAN should be enabled to have better global visibility.""They need more gateways""The solution doesn't offer failover between their own devices. If I want to, I should be able to put the two devices at the side, so there can be a failover.""It needs better security.""The initial setup could be simplified for beginners.""There is no security included, which is something that should be improved.""The cost of VeloCloud could be lowered.""VeloCloud needs improvement in terms of its security features."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"The price of FortiGate is good.""We just pay a flat monthly fee to the vendor for the support.""Its price is affordable and lesser than Cisco. Cisco is expensive. In terms of licensing, there is only one issue. If a customer's license has expired a month ago and they do the renewal after one month, Fortinet renews the license from the start of the previous month. The activation of the product is done from the previous month, not from the date of renewal. The customers usually shout and complain that because they are paying today, the renewal should start from today. The support contract renewals or licensing should be renewed from the date of renewal, but Fortinet starts from the day it had expired. It is a loss for customers. They might have had some problems because of which they did not take the license one month before. Fortinet should work on this. Cisco doesn't do this. Cisco always starts from the day they apply for the license.""It's an expensive solution.""The price of FortiGate is average and I would say that based on the top five products available on the market, it is in the affordable range.""The price could be lower.""Setup cost may be not so low, as you expect, because it depends on different factors, but TCO for 5 years may pleasantly surprise you.""The price of FortiGate support is too expensive."

More Fortinet FortiGate Pricing and Cost Advice »

"VeloCloud performs as well as the Cisco SD-WAN but it is cheaper in price.""The price of the solution could be reduced.""The pricing is very comparable to Fortinet.""My understanding is that the pricing is in the same range as other solutions.""You need to pay for a license to use this product.""The price of this solution is higher than that of other SD-WAN vendors.""The price of this solution should be lower.""The price is reasonable for this solution, but the only challenge for us is that the Rand currency fluctuates to the dollar and provides some complexities. The price might go up just because the Rand has actually lost value."

Overview

The FortiGate family of NG firewalls provides proven protection with unmatched performance across the network, from internal segments, to data centers, to cloud environments. FortiGates are available in a large range of sizes and form factors and are key components of the Fortinet Security Fabric, which enables immediate, intelligent defense against known and new threats throughout the entire network.

Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) is the application of softwarebased network technologies that virtualize WAN connections to provide agility,
performance and reliability for network traffic between remote and branch offices to
data centers and the cloud.

SD-WAN leverages cloud-hosting to simplify deployment and management of
network devices and employs traffic steering to applications in the data center and
the cloud. It combines the bandwidth of broadband with existing WAN connections to
more efficiently and cost-effectively connect users to data center and cloud-based
applications from any location in the network.

SD-WAN optimizes traffic over multiple available connections (MPLS, broadband,
LTE) to deliver traffic across the network, delivering a better user experience to any
location. SD-WAN will dynamically steer traffic to the best available link, and if the
available links show any transmission issues, it will immediately apply remediation for
jitter and packet loss based on policies to ensure performance of the high-priority
applications.
