Comparison Summary
Question: What are the biggest differences between Fortinet Fortigate and VMware SD-WAN?
Answer: I am not very familiar with Fortinet and I do not doubt that it is a good platform, however my experience with VMware SD-Wan has been excellent at a time like this when we are going through Covid-19 where through a VDI combination with SD- WAN provides a convenience in organizations to strengthen the capacities for a mobile and remote connection with high levels of flexibility, speed, performance, simplicity, scalability and above all security.

Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The notable features that I have found most valuable are that it includes the antivirus, and also IPS, and even SD-WAN.""The solution is extremely reliable.""The solution is stable.""Its user interface is good, and it is always working fine.""It's super reliable. I don't think I've ever had a reliability issue with it.""The most valuable feature of this solution is Quota.""Anti-Spam web content filterinG.""One of the nice things about FortiGate is that it can be deployed on the cloud or on-premises. You can actually do both. That's the biggest reason why I stick with this solution as opposed to something like Cisco Meraki. Another nice thing is that I can log directly into a FortiGate or get to it through their FortiCloud access products. They're pretty reliable and consistent. One of the reasons why I started using the product was their single pane of management. I can deploy their line of firewalls in conjunction with their switching and access points, and I can manage the entire network from one interface. I don't have to log into one interface for the firewall, another one for the access points, and another one for the switches. These firewalls have access point controller functionality built right into the system, so I don't even have to purchase additional devices to manage them."

"The biggest feature is called D.M.P.O., or Dynamic Multipath Optimization, which is one of the technologies that they use to deliver or ensure data integrity.""It is fairly similar to other solutions. It has the capability for testing link connectivity, which is its unique feature from a control perspective.""The service they provide is very stable and is the main influencer of why customers purchase this solution.""Has an optimization feature that acts to ensure the quality of the services running on the overlay to be most valuable.""Anyone can migrate over to VeloCloud, it's that simple, just plug in the necessary cables and it's done.""It is very simple to configure. When you use the cloud to configure the equipment, it has zero-touch provisioning.""VeloCloud developed DMPO to increase performance and connectivity.""This solution is as stable as most firewalls. VMware is a reputable vendor."

Cons
"The performance could be a bit better. Right now, I find it to be lacking. Having good performance is very important for our work.""They are doing good, but they can improve the distributor assignment. The availability of the product and the timeline of delivery are the main things. The distribution should be swift, and the distributor should not reach out to end customers directly. They should work as a distributor. There should also be one more local distributor. Currently, there is only one distributor in Pakistan, and the rest of them are in UAE. It is difficult to work with only one distributor. Sometimes, you don't get along with the same distributor, and that's why they should have one more distributor. Their licensing should also be improved. The activation or renewal of the product should be done from the date of renewal, not from the date on which the license expired.""There are some cloud-based features that could be much more flexible than they currently are.""Backup can be improved.""The cloud features can be improved.""The support is the main thing that needs to be improved.""You do need some IT knowledge in order to effectively work with the solution.""The integration with third-party tools may be something that they should work on."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"There are a number of customers we have that require a fully mashed SD-WAN on VeloCloud that is not available currently.""There should be more automation and self-service features.""Its integration with the security systems would be a nice implementation. They can also consider using a management platform for both network and security operations. This would be a great improvement.""It needs better security.""Reports could be simplified.""They should provide us with the flexibility to scale up.""VMware SD-WAN could be improved with more automation and more integration, but each vendor could use these improvements.""VeloCloud could improve its integration capabilities with other solutions."

    Overview

The FortiGate family of NG firewalls provides proven protection with unmatched performance across the network, from internal segments, to data centers, to cloud environments. FortiGates are available in a large range of sizes and form factors and are key components of the Fortinet Security Fabric, which enables immediate, intelligent defense against known and new threats throughout the entire network.

Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) is the application of softwarebased network technologies that virtualize WAN connections to provide agility,
performance and reliability for network traffic between remote and branch offices to
    data centers and the cloud.

SD-WAN leverages cloud-hosting to simplify deployment and management of
network devices and employs traffic steering to applications in the data center and
the cloud. It combines the bandwidth of broadband with existing WAN connections to
more efficiently and cost-effectively connect users to data center and cloud-based
applications from any location in the network.

SD-WAN optimizes traffic over multiple available connections (MPLS, broadband,
LTE) to deliver traffic across the network, delivering a better user experience to any
location. SD-WAN will dynamically steer traffic to the best available link, and if the
available links show any transmission issues, it will immediately apply remediation for
jitter and packet loss based on policies to ensure performance of the high-priority
    applications.
