Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The user experience [is] well thought out and the workflows are logical. The dashboards are intuitive and highly customizable.""It's very, very versatile.""The most valuable feature is definitely the ability that Devo has to ingest data. From the previous SIEM that I came from and helped my company administer, it really was the type of system where data was parsed on ingest. This meant that if you didn't build the parser efficiently or correctly, sometimes that would bring the system to its knees. You'd have a backlog of processing the logs as it was ingesting them.""The strength of Devo is not only in that it is pretty intuitive, but it gives you the flexibility and creativity to merge feeds. The prime examples would be using the synthesis or union tables that give you phenomenal capabilities... The ability to use a synthesis or union table to combine all those feeds and make heads or tails of what's going on, and link it to go down a thread, is functionality that I hadn't seen before.""Devo provides a multi-tenant, cloud-native architecture. This is critical for managed service provider environments or multinational organizations who may have subsidiaries globally. It gives organizations a way to consolidate their data in a single accessible location, yet keep the data separate. This allows for global views and/or isolated views restricted by access controls by company or business unit.""Devo helps us to unlock the full power of our data because they have more than 450 parsers, which means that we can ingest pretty much any type of log data.""Even if it's a relatively technical tool or platform, it's very intuitive and graphical. It's very appealing in terms of the user interface. The UI has a graphically interface with the raw data in a table. The table can be as big as you want it, depending on your use case. You can easily get a report combining your data, along with calculations and graphical dashboards. You don't need a lot of training, because the UI is relatively very intuitive.""In traditional BI solutions, you need to wait a lot of time to have the ability to create visualizations with the data and to do searches. With this kind of platform, you have that information in real-time."

"I use the stack every morning to check the errors and it's just so clear. I don't see any disadvantage to using Logstash.""ELK Logstash is easy and fast, at least for the initial setup with the out of box uses.""It's simple and easy to use.""The most valuable feature is the ability to collect authentication information from service providers.""We've found the initial setup to be quite straightforward.""The indexes allow you to get your results quickly. The filtering and log passing is the advantage of Logstash.""The solution is quite stable. The performance has been good.""The solution has a good community surrounding it for lots of helpful documentation for troubleshooting purposes."

"Sumo Logic is an easy solution to use. You can set it up very quickly, and it includes a lot of training videos.""The solution is quite stable."

Cons
"We only use the core functionality and one of the reasons for this is that their security operation center needs improvement.""The Activeboards feature is not as mature regarding the look and feel. Its functionality is mature, but the look and feel is not there. For example, if you have some data sets and are trying to get some graphics, you cannot change anything. There's just one format for the graphics. You cannot change the size of the font, the font itself, etc.""Some third-parties don't have specific API connectors built, so we had to work with Devo to get the logs and parse the data using custom parsers, rather than an out-of-the-box solution.""One major area for improvement for Devo... is to provide more capabilities around pre-built monitoring. They're working on integrations with different types of systems, but that integration needs to go beyond just onboarding to the platform. It needs to include applications, out-of-the-box, that immediately help people to start monitoring their systems. Such applications would include dashboards and alerts, and then people could customize them for their own needs so that they aren't starting from a blank slate.""Technical support could be better.""Some basic reporting mechanisms have room for improvement. Customers can do analysis by building Activeboards, Devo’s name for interactive dashboards. This capability is quite nice, but it is not a reporting engine. Devo does provide mechanisms to allow third-party tools to query data via their API, which is great. However, a lot of folks like or want a reporting engine, per se, and Devo simply doesn't have that. This may or may not be by design.""There's always room to reduce the learning curve over how to deal with events and machine data. They could make the machine data simpler.""From our experience, the Devo agent needs some work. They built it on top of OS Query's open-source framework. It seems like it wasn't tuned properly to handle a large volume of Windows event logs. In our experience, there would definitely be some room for improvement. A lot of SIEMs on the market have their own agent infrastructure. I think Devo's working towards that, but I think that it needs some improvement as far as keeping up with high-volume environments."

"I would like the process of retrieving archived data and viewing it in Kibana to be simplified.""Anything that supports high availability or ease of deployment in a highly available environment would help to improve this solution.""Better integration with third-party APMs would be really good.""In terms of what could be improved with Elastic, in some use cases, especially on the advanced level, they are not ready made, so you'll have to write some scripts.""Sometimes, the solution isn't the easiest to use.""The process of designing dashboards is a little cumbersome in Kibana. Unless you are an expert, you will not be able to use it. The process should be pretty straightforward. The authentication feature is what we are looking for. We would love to have a central authentication system in the open-source edition without the need for a license or an enterprise license. If they can give at least a simple authentication system within a company. In a large organization, authentication is very essential for security because logs can contain a lot of confidential data. Therefore, an authentication feature for who accesses it should be there.""One thing they could add is a quick step to enable users who don't have a solid background to build a dashboard and quickly search, without difficulty.""The solution does not have a UI and this is one of the reasons we are looking for another solution."

"Sumo Logic needs to make sure integrating solutions are seamless.""If you look at some of the other offerings right now that are available in the market, they do offer APM as well as the product they're offering. I believe Sumo Logic is not there yet. So that's something which I would love to see."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We have an OEM agreement with Devo. It is very similar to the standard licensing agreement because we are charged in the same way as any other customer, e.g., we use the backroom."
  • "I'm not involved in the financial aspect, but I think the licensing costs are similar to other solutions. If all the solutions have a similar cost, Devo provides more for the money."
  • "Devo is definitely cheaper than Splunk. There's no doubt about that. The value from Devo is good. It's definitely more valuable to me than QRadar or LogRhythm or any of the old, traditional SIEMs."
  • "[Devo was] in the ballpark with at least a couple of the other front-runners that we were looking at. Devo is a good value and, given the quality of the product, I would expect to pay more."
  • "Be cautious of metadata inclusion for log types in pricing, as there are some "gotchas" with that."
  • "Devo was very cost-competitive... Devo did come with that 400 days of hot data, and that was not the case with other products."
  • "Our licensing fees are billed annually and per terabyte."
  • "I like the pricing very much. They keep it simple. It is a single price based on data ingested, and they do it on an average. If you get a spike of data that flows in, they will not stick it to you or charge you for that. They are very fair about that."

  • "Elastic Stack is an open-source tool. You don't have to pay anything for the components."
  • "This is an open-source product, so there are no costs."
  • "It is easy to deploy, easy to use, and you get everything you need to become operational with it, and have nothing further to pay unless you want the OLED plugin."
  • "Compared to other products such as Dynatrace, this is one of the cheaper options."
  • "The solution is free."
  • "I find it better than Splunk in terms of cost-effectiveness. For cost-effectiveness, I would rate it a nine out of 10."
  • "Affordable but with additional costs"
