Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It has a lot of stock reports. I believe over 300 canned reports, which for the most part meet a lot of generic needs.""It generates very detailed reports, which makes things easier when it comes to IT auditing.""The solution is easy to use, flexible and has a lot of out-of-the-box functionality. You can configure the dashboards or you can use a script. However, to fully utilize its capabilities you will want to use a lot of scripts which you will need advanced training. The reports can be customized for many things, such as chargeback billing."

"You can scale the product.""One way they have improved our organization is through the stability of the solution and the availability of the product.""It's a very stable product, and we've never had any downtime with it.""It is good in terms of functionality. My clients are very satisfied with this solution.""IBM support is friendly, knowledgeable, and they always respond quickly. They've always been able to find the cause of my problem.""IBM Spectrum Protect offers stable software and products.""The feature we have found most valuable is when you want to integrate it with a Tape Library and then do the DRM life cycle. That is when it works the best.""We like IBM Spectrum's versioning capabilities. It lets us specify how many versions of a file we want to keep and for how long. Also, the archive component of the software helps us a lot."

Cons
"There is a steep learning curve to use the interface and to create new reports, this could be made easier. If the solution could provide more drag and drop functionality to build more advanced reports that would be very helpful.""They should empower their customers with the ability to upgrade this solution as long as it's in the same major release.""It's a bit difficult for first-time users."

"This solution is not mature in terms of disaster recovery and could be improved.""Technical support could be improved.""In a future release, it would be a benefit to have the ability to add an application as a storage target, as a storage pool. Additionally, they should add more functionality to the administration for the Operation Center.""IBM Spectrum Protect does have a lot of the features that we need, but I think they need to improve their backup virtualization and backup for container.""The solution could be more user-friendly and provide better monitoring. The monitoring should be improved first since it is a higher priority.""The reporting could be better.""There needs to be a bit more automation.""Its management part can be better and simplified. It is kind of a beast as compared to Commvault or Veeam, but they are more user-friendly. They are also easier to learn, whereas Spectrum Protect definitely takes time. They should simplify it. Our teams are pretty comfortable with it because we have been using it for a long time, but from the perspective of a new user who is evaluating or using this solution, it is definitely more complex in terms of manageability. Its monitoring could be improved so that it can even monitor the jobs that are scheduled by external schedulers. There are situations where a database team might decide to use their own schedulers, but currently, Spectrum Protect is not able to catch those jobs in the Operation Manager console."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It's not very expensive — I think the price is fair."
  • "You have to procure the license when you are ordering or quoting for Dell Data Protection Suite (DPS). DPS is bundled with the suite and comes with a license. However, if you purchase NetWorker separately then you will have to procure the license for DPS separately."

  • "The licensing fees are between $8,000 and $10,000 per year."
  • "IBM provides an open license policy, which is more like a gentlemen's agreement."
  • "One can go with either a PVU licensing model or a capacity based licensing model. Either solution does not block the usage, if over used."
  • "It is fairly reasonable as compared to other solutions in the market."
  • "We have capacity licensing. We use the front end. The capacity licensing is pretty okay on the licensing price. I used to use the old PVU-based licensing in the early environment, but now we use capacity-based licensing."
  • "It is really expensive. Its price is not good for Latin America. Its price is good for the United States or Europe."
  • "It is expensive."
  • "The solution is expensive."
